As our Medical Assistant at MercyOne, you'll help solve mysteries as to what's ailing a patient and get us one step closer to successfully treating that illness or injury. Using your expertise and our technology, you will work to recognize and assess urgent/emergency needs of patients and initiate appropriate emergency procedures as needed. Using your organizational skills, you will follow clinic procedure for the organization and management of documentation within the electronic medical record system.

In order to be successful in this role, you'll need to build trust in all your interactions through your professionalism and work ethic. You are very knowledgeable in all areas of your role but always eager to learn more. You keep impeccable records and knowledge of the current electronic medical record system. Confidentiality is of utmost importance to you. You keep your work area clean and perform initial patient check-in's according to your supervisor's guidelines. Most of all, you understand how vital your role is in the diagnosing and treating of our patients and you're eager to help us succeed in making them better.

Day-to-day overview:
  • Reviews medical records and obtains other pertinent information prior to office visit from hospitals and referring physicians' offices.
  • Prepares patient for exam and facilitates patient flow.
  • Performs tests and procedures, writes and prepares prescriptions utilizing and electronic physician signature.
  • Assists with transfer of patient.
  • Monitors and stocks medication closets.
  • Adaptability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers, patients and visitors, and satisfactory job performance despite the stress of a medical work environment.
LPN
  • Demonstrates ability to recognize and assess urgent/emergency needs of patients and initiate appropriate emergency procedures as needed.
  • Demonstrates current level of knowledge of various payor regulations by functioning within those guidelines.
  • Acts to facilitate interdisciplinary communication. Utilizes other members of the health care team in assessing the patient and analyzes patient data. Assesses learning needs of the patient and significant others. Gives accurate and complete information to patient and family.
  • Follows clinic procedure/protocol for the organization and management of the electronic medical record (i.e. test results, retrieval, filing, creation, repair, charging of electronic medical record).
  • Evaluates patient and family understanding of treatment plan and/or instructions.
  • Assists with a variety of procedures, exams and/or operation of diagnostic equipment as assigned (i.e., tympanometry, spirometry, etc.).
  • Maintains appropriate aseptic technique for preparation, procedures and medications administered.
  • Accurately and legibly documents all patient interactions in electronic medical record.
  • Reports results and pertinent information to patients and health care team members.
  • Functions according to limitations or scope of license or certification.
  • Performs basic nursing functions (vitals, rooming, assist with procedures, immunizations, medication injections, etc.), under direction and supervision of provider.
Maintains professional appearance of patient exam and procedure rooms

Medical Assistant:
  • Successful completion of a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) certification must be obtained within first year of employment and maintained thereafter.
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained by the end of the orientation period (approximately six (6) weeks).
  • Valid Driver's/Chauffeurs License required, must meet Mercy's Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, must be at least 18 years of age and be eligible to drive per state law.
  • Cardiovascular Medical Terminology class completion within 1 year of hire.
LPN:
  • Current LPN license issued by the State of Iowa
  • Clinic/physician office experience preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population serve within three (3) months of hire.
