Associate Director of Debate, Upper School

The Woodward Academy Upper School strives to help students fulfill their potential in every facet of their lives. Whether they are promoting academic excellence or demonstrating personal accountability, the members of the faculty find creative and meaningful ways to communicate with their students. The Woodward Academy debate team has a long tradition of excellence in policy debate including numerous state and national championships. The team competes at both the local and national level between September and April. This position involves co-teaching debate courses grades 9-12 and also serving as a coach to the team at practice and approximately 20 tournaments a season. This position begins August 1, 2024 and is for the 2024-25 school year. The successful candidate will be a highly experienced policy debate coach who is energetic, hard-working, and motivated to work with the existing Director of Debate to maintain and improve this very successful program. Specific duties include: Co-Teach 2-4 Upper School Debate Courses with the Director of Debate. Conduct substantial original research. Guide student research by determining research needs and helping students improve their research skills. Teach after school practices from 3:45-6:00PM two days per week. Attend approximately ten weekend tournaments per semester and coach and judge debates at those tournaments. Review student speeches and provide feedback and coaching on those speeches. Judge practice debates at practice with the goal of improving student performance. Support the Director of Debate by performing other duties as needed. Required Skills:

Record of successful high school or college coaching, including success at the national level. Record of producing high-quality debate research. Ability to communicate with students and build supportive relationships. Willingness to chaperone and supervise students on overnight trips. Ability to demonstrate patience while engaging and challenging students. Minimum job qualifications:

Experience coaching debate in high school or collegiate level preferred. The Associate Director of Debate position is a full time 10-month position and is paid according to an annual salary. Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Benefits are substantial. #J-18808-Ljbffr
