Associate Laboratory Technician Labs and Soft Matter

a Labs and Soft Matter Sample Environment Associate Technician at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Under general supervision provide technical support for the Neutron Scattering Division (NSD) sample management and user laboratories.
Works as an integral part of the flow of chemicals and samples into and out of the division. This includes ordering, receiving, storing, inventory, tracking, shipping, and waste/recyclables collection and categorization.
Works within ORNL and NScD databases/systems to ensure compliance and tracking of laboratory activities.
Performs basic laboratory housekeeping, ordering and organization.
Interacts constantly with internal and external users of the laboratories. Provides training, service and assistance to users with diverse backgrounds.
Maintains strong commitment to customer service.
Writes and implements Hazard Analyses.
Reads and understands Safety Data Sheets.
Identifies and appropriately works with a variety of chemical and equipment hazards.
Basic Qualifications:
Associates degree in a scientific or technical discipline and a minimum of one year of experience.
An equivalent combination of education, training and experience can be considered instead of a degree.
Competent user of various types of software such as office automation, databases, and web applications.
Familiarity with basic chemistry.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Previous experience working with radiological samples and controls.
History of working within a QMS, ISO, or GMP environment.
Experience supporting technical staff, including scientists.
Experience handling, tracking, and shipping samples.
Experience working with Department of Transportation regulations.
Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Other Job Requirements:
This position requires some physical activity, such as carrying lightweight items, etc.
