Overview:

The Nuclear Measurements and Analytical Services (NMAS) Group of the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division (NRPD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for the External Dosimetry Technician position to support the External Dosimetry Program (EDP) Laboratory. Accredited by the Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP) for personnel dosimetry, EDP provides dosimetry services to radiological workers at ORNL and other DOE prime contractors in Oak Ridge, TN.

ORNL is the largest U.S. Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. The NRPD is responsible for partnering with operations and research staff to support the science mission while protecting staff from nuclear and radiological hazards and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine calibration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Harshaw Model 8800 Thermoluminescent Dosimeters (TLD) Reader and associated equipment in the External Dosimetry Lab.
  • Disassemble, inspect, and process beta-gamma, neutron, and extremity dosimeters used for personnel monitoring, test exposures, and technical studies.
  • Develop schedules for assembly of monthly and quarterly dosimetry exchanges and monitor implementation to ensure successful completion.
  • Assign and assemble beta-gamma, neutron, and extremity dosimeters for issue to personnel or use in test exposures.
  • Conduct acceptance testing of new dosimeter components prior to addition to inventory to ensure they are free from defects and meet specifications.
  • Work with the EDP technical specialist and EDP Manager in developing new processes and reviewing internal operating procedures.
  • Assist in maintaining DOELAP accreditation by preparing and processing dosimeters for performance testing.
  • Execute dosimetry database applications to handle dosimeter processing data for all operations.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Requires an associate degree with at least 5 years' experience in a science or technical field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Physical requirements work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in occupational radiation protection, external dosimetry, or instrumentation repair and calibration is desired.
  • Must have the ability to handle confidential information and materials and maintain professionalism in a demanding environment.
  • Excellent organizational and work planning skills; able to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Computer proficiency in Windows-based application software and web-based office system and software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, SAP) are required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
