The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division (NND) performs a wide range of scientific, technical, and programmatic activities in all facets of the nuclear enterprise from nonproliferation to research and development (R&D) pertaining to nuclear materials processing, management, and transportation. The Verification Technologies group within NND at ORNL seeks applications for an Advanced Reactor Nonproliferation Scientist.

We are seeking a candidate who will specifically focus on applying existing knowledge of nuclear reactors and associated fuel cycles to the development of approaches and technologies for quantifying and monitoring nuclear material in advanced reactors and supporting fuel cycle facilities. This work includes the development of research proposals, support for working groups and strategic efforts, and reporting of R&D results in peer-reviewed journal publications, conference papers and technical reports.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

-Develop approaches and technologies to quantify and monitor nuclear material in advanced reactors and supporting fuel cycle facilities for safeguards and security applications.
-Collaborate with project managers, subject matter experts, other researchers, and industry to assess proliferation resistance of advanced reactor designs.
-Document and/or publish technical work as appropriate in user manuals, technical reports, journals, and conference papers.
-Develop and present research proposals to generate new funding.
-Perform work activities in nuclear and/or radiological facilities/environments.
-Occasional travel to support domestic and international engagements related to work scope.

Basic Qualifications:

-BS
in engineering, scientific, nonproliferation, or related field and four (4) years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
-Experience with traditional and/or advanced nuclear technologies (i.e., reactors and associated fuel cycles).
 

Preferred Qualifications:

-Knowledge of technical challenges associated with nonproliferation.
-Demonstrated problem-solving skills, a willingness those skills to a variety of problems, and the ability to determine and understand the broader context of your work.
-Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) to interact with co-workers, sponsors, research collaborators, and industry personnel. 
-Working knowledge of International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards and/or the Nuclear Regulatory Commission material control and accounting.
-Knowledge of one or more modeling tools useful for evaluating radiation signatures or generating isotopic inventories (e.g., MCNP, Geant4, SCALE, TRANSFORM, GADRAS)
-Demonstrated experience with customer/industry engagement.
-Ability to excel in a team environment with peers, mentors, and non-subject matter experts.

-Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
