The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Heritage Sites Program is seeking a full-time, permanent Archaeological Field Director. The Leech Lake Reservation is located in the beautiful lake country of Northern Minnesota, where there are countless outdoor recreation opportunities, including fishing, hunting, boating, swimming, hiking, camping, and sightseeing, to namea few. The Reservation boundaries overlap those of the Chippewa National Forest, with Itasca State Park (Headwaters of the Mississippi River) and Lake Bemidji State Park located a short drive away. Directs and conducts field and lab work and prepares reports and other deliverables associated with contract requirements for internal reservation survey projects and fieldwork statewide and throughout the Midwest Education Requirements and Experience: Master of Arts/Science Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field. Meet all requirements established in 36 CFR Part 61 . Experience with Mississippi Headwaters, Upper Midwest or Great Lakes archaeology preferred. Additional Qualifications and Skills: Familiarity with SHPO guidelines for Archeological Projects in Minnesota. Experience with ArcGIS and the operation of GPS units. Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Publisher Good understanding of current principles, practices and procedures in the field of archaeology and Cultural Resource Management. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with staff and supervisors. Proven ability to carry research to completion. Demonstrated ability to successfully lead field crews in the completion of field projects. Ability to accurately read topo maps and to navigate cross-country across difficult terrain. Ability to travel overnight for out-of-town projects as required. Must be able to obtain a MN license to conduct archaeological investigations. Good attendance and punctuality required. Supervisory Duties:

Lead crews in completion of archaeological survey projects and oversee and assist with the processing, cataloging, and analysis of recovered artifacts. Duties/Responsibilities: Conducts background research and produces maps/aerial photos for archaeological surveys Conducts archaeological surveys in cooperation with Crew Supervisors, other Field Directors, and the Program Director. Conducts training for incoming personnel. Ensures that all assigned surveys are thoroughly and efficiently conducted, properly documented and field site maps are accurately rendered. Conducts lab artifact analysis, accessioning and report preparation. Assists with Access and GIS database updates and maintenance Assists the Program Director with bid preparation Attends and or conduct all mandatory meetings and trainings as required. Maintains confidentiality and professional ethics at all times. Travels in and out of the state on a potentially regular basis. Possesses an understanding and sensitivity to Native American culture. Adheres to policies governing staff conduct. All other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift and carry materials weighing between 15-25 pounds. Heavy manual labor conducted outdoors. Ability to work outdoors for extended periods of time and the ability to work during all types of inclement weather, in all types of terrain (i.e. swamps, bogs, uplands, and areas of heavy tree fall). Ability to deal with hazards associated with forest activities, such as biting insects, poisonous plants, and various types of wildlife.
