ResponsibilitiesThe Pharmacist-Poison Control serves as an expert clinical consultant to physicians and healthcare providers as well as an advocate for patients ensuring poisoned patients are seen promptly and treated expertly to resolve their toxicity. The incumbent consults with healthcare providers from all healthcare facilities in Kentucky to provide the most appropriate and up to date pharmacotherapy recommendations. The Pharmacist-Poison Control also to assess the degree of clinical toxicity and choose the course of therapy to improve the patient's clinical progress in the most appropriate and efficient manner. Communication is accomplished in a remote fashion with the medical team. For patients contacting the center directly, the incumbent assesses the need for medical care, provides instructions for pre-hospital management, and alerts the healthcare based medical team to the needs of the incoming patient. The incumbent also works directly with 911 and pre-hospital emergency medical providers to provide consultation for treatment and stabilization of patients on-site and during transport. The pharmacist additionally responds to medication related inquiries concerning therapy appropriateness, dosing errors, and assessment and management of adverse medication effects. Candidates are pharmacists, certified as specialists in poison information by the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) with excellent clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Must be able to work independently and effectively manage tasks in a fast-paced environment, communicating telephonically and simultaneously managing multiple medical databases and electronic documentation. Must be a team player with a positive attitude able to work in a multi-disciplinary environment.
