St. John's College High School is seeking a learning specialist to begin in the 24-25 school year to work as a full-time faculty member in our Benilde Program, which is the school's program for students who typically have a dual diagnosis of learning differences and can be successful in a college preparatory environment. Students in the Benilde program attend a direct instructional period focused on developing and strengthening written language, reading comprehension and verbal communication skills within the context of the curriculum. During this instruction, students are taught strategies to improve higher-level reasoning skills and self-management. Students are motivated and engaged in the learning process. The Benilde Department is committed to meeting the needs of a range of learners. Currently, four faculty work with individual grade levels, and the director oversees the students and the program and is assigned a group of students.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide targeted support to students to assist them in gaining or maintaining content mastery
  • Provide direct individual or small group remedial and enrichment instruction
  • Provide assistance with executive functioning challenges and other content-knowledge support such as in math, critical reading and writing
  • Working with specifically assigned groups of students at certain times
  • Consult and maintain consistent communication with school faculty, student's parents, and the director of the Benilde Program to monitor and report on student progress
  • Collaborate with Benilde Faculty
  • Engage in professional growth responsibilities keeping abreast of best practices in learning differences and neurodiversity
  • Other responsibilities as assigned
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and support St. John's College High School's mission and vision
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's or Masters degree in Special Education or a related field
  • Classroom teaching experience specifically working with learning differences
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current best practices in the area of learning differences
  • Compassion and patience when working with students
  • Ability to grasp a college preparatory curriculum in order to provide support to students
  • Demonstrated ability to teach in 1:1 or small group setting and knowledge and experience with effective classroom management strategies
  • Ability to read and analyze psychological evaluations in order to apply findings to subsequently created school-based learning plans
  • Commitment to meeting the needs of a diverse student population
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
