As a General Assistant you are responsible for moving mattresses, light bed movement, and assisting with janitorial tasking.

POSITION: General Assistant

SEASON: Austral Winter (February 2025- May 2025)

LOCATION: McMurdo Station, Antarctica

SECTOR/DEPT: Gana-A'Yoo Services Corporation (GSC) Antarctica

SALARY: $810 per week

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for mattress installation and removal
  • Assistance in moving janitorial items
  • Transporting and assembling bed frames
  • Performs daily tasking in an efficient and thorough manner
  • Occasional transportation and processing of linens
  • May also be tasked to assist in special projects, including furniture moving, carpet extraction, waxing and buffing floors, and seasonal building opening/closing
  • Responsible for reporting any maintenance issues
  • Able to complete assignments in a timely, organized manner, following through with tasking from beginning to end
  • Agrees with and adheres to the Standard Operating Procedures and tasking responsibilities in Janitorial and General Assistant duties
  • Able to work in a team unit composed of diverse personalities
  • Displays self-motivation in physically challenging and atypical work environment
  • Able to maintain flexibility and positive attitude in a dynamic, fast-paced work setting
  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace
  • Occasionally assists in the janitorial department as time allowd
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by manager-on-duty.
EDUCATION:
  • High school education or GED.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to lift/carry/move up to 50 lbs for an extended period of time
  • Must wear composite toe shoes
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move around the facility 75% or more of the time. The employee is occasionally required to remain in a stationary position for at least 25% of the time. The employee frequently is required to maneuver self to be able to reach product and/or materials needed for task. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 65 pounds. Must have capacity for exposure to long hours, days, and weeks away from home.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum of one year experience in a custodial related or manual labor industry required.
  • Previous experience with Stations Services in Antarctica may be accepted in lieu of minimum experience.
OTHER:
  • US citizenship or permanent residency required
  • A prerequisite of employment for this position is to successfully gain a favorable Tier 1 - Elevated Background Investigation (EBI) result prior to deployment.
