The Solar Field Engineer provides technical support for both owned and third-party solar and battery storage assets. Responsibilities include developing maintenance strategies and processes to enhance financial performance and sustainability of solar plants. The engineer collaborates closely with multiple departments, including Solar Performance and Reliability Engineering, to guide lifecycle planning and new plant development.

Responsibilities:

Field Assistance and Process Standardization (45%):

  • Coordinate maintenance, support, documentation, and testing activities to align with OEM manuals and industry best practices.
  • Develop and implement monitoring systems for solar and battery storage assets in collaboration with SIG/OT.
  • Conduct analytical reviews on solar and battery facilities for accurate modeling and corrective actions.
  • Create methods to analyze operational data for regular updates.
  • Develop standardized work processes and institutionalize them with the Document Control team.
  • Define technician training, qualifications, and content as a Subject Matter Expert.
  • Evaluate system components and identify alternate suppliers.
  • Identify and source repair and replacement materials.
  • Validate processes developed by various enterprise-wide experts.
  • Continuously improve mobile information and documentation for field technicians.

Field Support (40%):

  • Train and assist site personnel in safe work practices, thermography, and battery testing and maintenance.
  • Integrate enterprise-wide processes into the solar business with other Subject Matter Experts.
  • Maintain current revisions of technical libraries with technical services and procurement.
  • Provide technical direction during unplanned outages for safe and timely restoration.
  • Evaluate high-risk equipment and coordinate analyses and corrective actions.
  • Perform lean management to drive continuous improvement.
  • Assess the efficiency and value of standardized work.

Coordination of System Turnover (10%):

  • Ensure installation and operations conform to standards and requirements by studying technical drawings.
  • Verify as-built drawings against physical installations.
  • Assist in commissioning and testing during the transition from construction to operations.
  • Coordinate documentation turnover for solar and battery storage systems.

Other Duties (5%):

  • Oversee contractors and subcontractors working on solar and battery storage systems.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • B.S. degree in Electrical or Industrial Engineering, formal apprenticeship, or equivalent combination of work experience and technical training.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in heavy industry, power generation, or related field.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge in electrical troubleshooting of circuits and controls.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for AC/DC high, medium, and low voltage circuits.
  • Knowledge of testing and troubleshooting transformers, relays, inverters, and related equipment.
  • Proficient in reading technical drawings and investigating equipment failures.
  • Strong understanding of NFPA electrical codes, IEC standards, and OSHA regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work across multiple departments and with external contractors.
  • Proficient in computer applications such as Word, Excel, SAP, SCADA, and data management software.
  • Strong understanding of continuous improvement methodologies and lean process design.

Travel:

  • Requires at least 25% travel to asset locations, primarily between Bakersfield and Vegas. Travel may increase to 50% depending on site issues.
