Job Description / Essential Elements:

LIBRARY CLERK/MEDIA TECHNICIAN

Responsibility:

Under the general supervision of the school principal, maintains library systems at the school level.

Essential Functions:

1. Provides library, audio-visual, and computer research assistance to staff members and students.

2. Performs clerical and para-professional library work associated with circulation of library books, periodicals, audio-visual, and computer research.

3. Trains students in library research skills; prepares lessons to get children interested in reading.

4. Checks books in/out of library; orders books and library supplies.

5. Maintains current computer catalogue and inventory of materials.

6. Prepares displays and bulletin boards to get children interested in reading.

7. Files materials and orders supplies as needed.

8. Maintains a quiet, studious atmosphere in library.

9. Possesses ability to understand, read, and carry out oral and written direction.

Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Promotes interest in reading books via displays, posters, reviewing books with students, etc. and reading lab projects.

2. Maintains an open list of requested books.

3. Prepares student lessons/activities to teach skills and get children interested in reading.

4. Sends late notices and collects fines for lost books.

5. Assists classes with research projects; trains parent volunteers.

6. Prepares and processes books for circulation; check books for damage and repair/mend as needed.

7. Assists principal in analyzing and planning for future needs of the library and Computer Research Center.

8. Meets with all administrators and librarians for annual budget needs.

9. Assists staff and students in accessing computer information through CD ROM and computer network.

10. Attends library clerk meetings and library grant meetings.

11. Collects/processes monies from birthday book club, ensures children choose birthday book, and prepares birthday books for addition to library.

12. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Qualifications:

1. Knowledge of library terminology and standard library practices/techniques.

2. Current with types/uses of library materials and current literature/publications.

3. Ability to use library rules, regulations, and processes to catalog and maintain books.

4. Ability to prepare and maintain complete and accurate reports and records.

5. Ability to type and use a Macintosh computer; knowledge of computer software and use of CD ROM materials.

Education and Experience:

1. Six months of sub-professional library experience, preferably in a school library.

2. Ability to type and use a Macintosh and personal computer; knowledge of computer software and use of CD ROM materials.

Physical Requirements:

1. Position requires moderate physical exertion associated with the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, or climb.

2. Position requires physical capability for sustained physical work; requires strength and endurance associated with moderate physical effort.

3. Lifting 25 lbs. maximum or carrying any object weighing over 15 lbs.
