Curator of Education and Public Programs – Davis Museum, Wellesley College
The Davis Museum at Wellesley College seeks a creative and dynamic Curator of Education and Public Programs to develop, plan, and supervise a range of programs and co-curricular opportunities that enrich and expand the educational mission of the institution. The position plays a key role through creative engagement with our diverse constituent communities, on-campus and beyond, through innovative programming.
This full time, exempt position reports to the Assistant Director of Curatorial Affairs, works collaboratively across Museum departments, and is an integral member of the curatorial team.
Duties and Responsibilities
Plans, schedules, coordinates, and manages special events and programs that promote the mission and exhibitions of the Davis, including events, artist talks and scholarly lectures, panel discussions, screenings, symposia, and Family Days.
Manages the annual Davis Museum Summer Internship Program, with responsibility for content, form, budget, and supervision of a student Internship Coordinator and student Education Intern.
Leads regular tours and coordinates the Davis Tour Guide program, comprised of paid student volunteers; develops programs in relation to Davis Museum permanent collections and special exhibitions; trains, implements, schedules, and evaluates.
Contributes interpretive strategies within the Curatorial Department context.
Coordinates with curatorial and technology staff on distribution of materials through print, email, website, app, and social media.
Coordinates with curatorial and technology staff on remote and hybrid programs and presentations.
Coordinates Davis Museum contribution to the Wellesley College Arts Calendar each semester and acts as key liaison with the Public Affairs office.
Supervises and coordinates the Davis Museum Student Advisory Committee (DMSAC), a student group of peer ambassadors and Davis advocates.
Provides support for all programming.
Basic Qualifications
BA in art history, art, or related degree required; MA preferred and strongly encouraged to apply;
Minimum of 3 years experience in developing public programming and interpretive content within an art museum or cultural heritage institution.
Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated success in developing, implementing, and sustaining new initiatives and working with diverse publics. Excellent writing, communication, and public speaking skills; successful project management experience; exceptional organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to handle many activities and projects simultaneously; experience supervising volunteers and interns; facility with new technologies and social media. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
The successful candidate will join the staff of a museum at the center of the intellectual life of a vital undergraduate campus, will align closely with the Davis Museum’s DEAI values of inclusion, excellence, innovation, and access, and will bring strong commitment to to the unique orientation of the academic museum and to the teaching mission of the Davis. Candidates must be creative and flexible with strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to work well with a broad spectrum of the Museum’s communities. Excellent problems-solving skills and ability to work in a team-oriented environment are essential; candidates must be collegial, collaborative, and committed to a positive culture.
