Position Summary
This role will provide crucial support to MCNC and its network engineering and operational teams in effectively maintaining the statewide MCNC fiber network. Responsibilities will encompass ensuring the fiber infrastructure adheres to industry standards, collaborating closely with contracted maintenance personnel retained by MCNC. Additionally, the position will entail representing MCNC in meetings with various entities, including the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Estimating the costs for future expansions based on the existing fiber network
will also be a key aspect of the role.

The ideal candidate will divide their time between office-based tasks and fieldwork as dictated by the network's demands and operational needs. Flexibility is essential, as the role may require statewide travel and occasional late-night work, particularly during emergency restoration efforts. MCNC will provide a company vehicle for transportation to job sites, and relevant business expenses such as meals and accommodations will be reimbursed.

Field duties will involve conducting random inspections of the network infrastructure, colocation facilities, maintenance and repair activities, as well as overseeing new construction projects in collaboration with contractors to ensure the network's integrity. Additionally, the role will entail mapping the fiber network using GIS mapping software and creating other design drawings as needed.

Minimum Education, Experience and Skills Requirements
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or related degree or equivalent experience.
  • 3 - 7 years of experience in the telecommunications field providing fiber design or field quality control inspection.
  • Experience working in a carrier network or a large enterprise network.
  • Experience using OTDR's and reading trace files for testing and reporting purposes.
  • Travel will be required statewide as needed as well as late evening and night work from time to time.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and will be required to drive a company vehicle on company business. Pre-employment and annual MVR checks will be required during your employment with the company for this position in order to be approved to drive a company-owned vehicle
  • Background and sex offender checks will be performed for pre-employment and annually during your employment with the company
  • This role will be required to adhere to the MCNC Substance Abuse policy, which may include drug/alcohol screening at hire and periodically or randomly during employment.
  • Adherence to all OSHA, state, city/municipality safety requirements
  • Wearing appropriate protective footwear and clothing while performing field operations will be required.
  • The position may require frequent lifting or use of force to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work outdoors and drive in all types of weather.
  • Must be able to sit, drive, stand, and walk for extended periods.
