Responsible for the management of the assigned power plant(s) environmental and operational chemistry functions. Direct site activities to ensure that operations are consistent with the rules and guidelines for operational plant chemistry activities and needs and to ensure compliance to environmental regulations and implementing corporate environmental policy/standards. Directs and evaluates scientific principles, technologies and/or performs scientific research related to specific environmental and/or operational chemistry requirements. Acts as critical respondent to any site specific environmental request for information resulting from an agency inspection and is the first line representative during the inspections.
LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY
Supervises daily activities of team. Sets priorities to accomplish task or process completion. Decisions guided by policies, procedures and business plan. Typically does not perform same work as subordinates.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
* Ensure plant operation that is in compliance with local, state and federal environmental rules, regulations, and permits (including but not limited to air, water, waste and other regulated substances).
* Ensure the reliable operation of plants makeup and waste water treatment systems.
* Ensures maintenance, configuration and calibration of process analytical instrumentation utilized in a multitude of processes critical to power generation.
* Routinely makes technical decisions concerning the maintenance and repair of critical components of the water treatment systems (clarification, filtration, chemicals, RO, demin), boiler chemistry control (chemicals, injection rates/ratios monitoring systems), waste water systems (impoundments, outfalls, treatments, management, permitting), and CEMS (reporting, documenting, method 9).
* Acts as subject matter expert and coaches and mentors less experienced members in their training and development.
* Sets priorities and utilizes resources to accomplish organizational and department objectives.
* Collaborates strategically with plant management to ensure alignment and accomplishment of plant goals.
* Delegates work to ensure operational excellence.
* Reviews lower level work product and provides direction on corrections.
* Schedules and coordinates daily activities with peer operations personnel and is able to negotiate scheduling conflicts.
* Directs activities of envirochemical contractors and vendors.
* Provide technical management for environmental and water treatment projects.
* Evaluate project progress and manpower performance (internal and external) and report to management.
* Develop maintenance and process improvements for process chemistry and water treatment for safe utilization in a multitude of processes involved in electrical generation.
* Direct, plan, and conduct assignments of a complex nature.
* Company representative in agency inspections.
* Actively develop and manage budgets.
* Assist in maintaining and controlling spare parts inventory.
* Leads and reviews routine reporting of required environmental media.
REQUIREMENTS
* Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or other related Scientific field; and
* 5 years experience in environmental compliance (e.g. environmental laboratory, regulatory, environmental consulting, NPDES permit compliance, SPCC, SW3P, Title V); and
* 5 years experience in process chemistry (e.g., power plant make up water treatment, boiler cycle chemistry, industrial waste water treatment).
*Environmental chemistry experience and process chemistry experience can be concurrent.
WORKING CONDITIONS
* Required to work non-standard hours as necessary.
* Requires travel to include overnight stays, as needed.
* Work in small enclosed areas, high places, noisy and dusty conditions and wear personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to chemicals.
* Work independently under stressful conditions.
* Required to work with multi-craft crews and other groups who work together to support operations of the plant.
