Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut
About Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut
Founded in 1983, the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut serves as the hub for meaningful philanthropy for 42 communities in the eastern third of our state, with a total population of approximately 450,000 residents.
We manage over 600 funds that were created by generous people who care deeply about their communities. Together, the funds entrusted to us provide over $8 million each year in grants and scholarships in Eastern Connecticut and beyond.
We help donors and their professional advisors establish personally meaningful charitable funds that make a lasting impact on the issues and communities of greatest interest to them. Our experience helps us connect them to the region’s current and emerging needs and bring about enduring change. Thanks to the funds established by our donors, we are able to offer charitable grants to nonprofit organizations to support their work in our communities; as well as hundreds of annual scholarships to help local students pursue their educational dreams.
Throughout our 40-year history, we have routinely convened meetings of community leaders, nonprofits, service agencies, business leaders, volunteers, donors and local residents to discuss our shared challenges and to explore and pursue the best ways to address them.
The Director of Donor Relations is responsible for developing, cultivating, and expanding relationships with the Foundation’s donors, professional advisors and fundholders. The Director of Donor Relations develops relationships with new potential fund holders and manages existing fund holder relationships, providing exceptional service and ensuring their long-term collaboration with the Foundation. Emphasis is on building relationships with prospects, donors, and community partners within Eastern Connecticut.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with the Director of Development to coordinate activities and strategically increase new, and support existing, donors at all levels of the giving spectrum, including annual giving, loyalty giving, and planned giving societies, as well as for special initiatives and campaigns.
Represent the Foundation at community activities, cultivating relationships with potential donors, businesspeople, community members, and nonprofits. Act as a spokesperson for the Foundation and its mission, and, in general, serve as an ambassador for the Foundation by promoting the Foundation to all its constituencies.
Secure one-on-one in-person donor meetings and solicitations to establish new and strengthen existing donor relationships.
Cultivate donors from beginning of relationship to closing gifts while delivering exceptional service.
Maintain accurate records of outreach and solicitation through regular upkeep of donor database.
Work closely with Foundation staff, particularly the Director of Development, to ensure quality stewardship, engagement, and donor service activities.
Cultivate and solicit gifts individually or jointly with the President and/or Director of Development.
Solicit and secure gifts at the major gift level, including multi-year gifts. This will include identification, cultivation, and stewardship of high-net-worth individuals, with a heavy focus on prospecting for new donors.
Provide support to the President in managing the President’s portfolio of donors.
In conjunction with the Director of Development, assure compliance with the Gift Acceptance Policy and convene the Gift Acceptance Committee as needed.
Develop a compelling case for support and oversee the creation of appropriate donor materials.
Work closely with the Communications Officer to:
Align development-related communications with the organizational brand and provide ongoing evaluation of key messaging as it relates to development;
Collaborate on effective strategies for direct mail, online giving and donor cultivation;
Develop materials appropriate for prospective and current fundholders and donors.
Manage Development Committee and engage members in cultivation of current and potential donors.
