Some judgment may be required but this is typically with guidance.Job DescriptionRole SummaryThe Engineer – Aero-Thermal Lab plans and conducts tests to explore aerodynamics and heat transfer of key parts in the engine. The lab supports the next-gen commercial and military engines as well as continual improvements to engines already in production. Test campaigns in the lab validate technologies to reduce environmental impact of commercial engines and increase capability of military engines.In this role, you will be responsible for planning and executing aero or thermal component test campaigns in support of all GEA engine programs, as well as development of advanced measurement techniques. The engineer will take a communicated need from a GE engine program, determine a test method to achieve it, design the test rig, and execute the test. Throughout this process the engineer will direct their own actions as well as those of technicians and contractors. They will use their experience or expertise to solve problems.Roles and ResponsibilitiesThe GE Aviation Aerothermal Technology Labs are responsible for experimental evaluation of aerodynamic and thermodynamic performance on turbomachinery components in support of all GE Aviation engine programs, as well as, development of advanced aerothermal measurement techniques.There are 3 primary functions in the Aerothermal Technology Labs:Aerodynamic Technology Lab- Aerodynamic performance evaluation using scaled simulations of fans, compressors, and turbines Thermal Technology Lab - Evaluation of heat transfer and cooling performance of combustors, turbines, and exhaust components Advanced Measurements - Development of advanced aerodynamic and thermal experimental measurement techniquesIn the role of Engineer – Aero-Thermal Lab, you will be responsible to lead experimental component test evaluation efforts within the Aero-Thermal Lab and at partner organizations, measuring aerodynamic and thermal performance of various turbomachinery components.In addition, the Engineer – Aero-Thermal Lab will:Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned individual and team projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirementsProvide technical leadership to personnel / cross functional teams supporting the assigned projectImplement plans with guidance to meet technical requirements of assigned components and systemsDevelop action plans with guidance to respond to issues / problemsLead or participate on teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and generic issuesRecommend, with guidance, the approach to meet the technical and program requirementsParticipate and present or review in technical and program reviewsAssure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and / or tasks consistent with engineering policies and proceduresQualifications/RequirementsBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or other relevant field5+ years direct work experience in lab setting studying relevant technology- PHd or Master's degree & work experience acceptable in lieu of full 3 yearsParticipation in engineering tests in an academic or company environmentFamiliarity with CAD/Solid modeling of mechanical componentsFamiliarity with fundamentals of aerodynamics and heat transferExperience with data reduction and analysis via Excel, Matlab, or similarAbility to lift 25 lbs unassistedDesired Characteristics1+ years experience supervising technical work of lab technicians or other test engineersBe willing and capable of working in a physical testing environment at various locationsAbility and willingness to travel as required to testing locationsExperience with experimental aerodynamic and/or thermal measurement techniques in a lab / test environmentExperience with Labview or other data acquisition systemDemonstrated ability to design, set up, and troubleshoot complex systemsDemonstrated experience applying measurement techniquesWorking knowledge of general test and processing methodsKnowledge of mechanical design and assembly proceduresGraduate degree or desire to pursue graduate degree in EngineeringStrong oral and written communication skillsFluency in the English LanguageStrong interpersonal and leadership skillsAbility to influence others and lead small teamsLead initiatives of moderate scope and impactAbility to obtain and maintain a US Government Security ClearanceThis role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information.
