In this role, a typical day will include: Conducting process research, process development, and process upscaling for new medical device products. Investigating and evaluating existing technology and designing new methodology, materials, machines, or processes as needed for medical device development. Planning, conducting, and directing research and/or development of major significance that is highly difficult and complex in nature, necessitating the expert application of advanced knowledge in a particular field of specialization. Supporting engineering decision-making by providing advice and recommendations to global project teams. Focusing on implementing and executing strategies in own area of expertise and providing thought leadership in own area. Utilizing in-depth scientific/technical knowledge within a clear framework and providing expert input to complex assignments. Providing authoritative technical or professional advice and recommendations to influence internal and/or external contacts. Developing and applying complex concepts and proposing new and unique approaches, methods, procedures, and designs with regular use of ingenuity, creativity, and originality. Applying advanced level engineering principles to the research and development of medical devices and/or providing engineering expertise to support development. Assuring continuity of products and processes through feasibility assessment, research, design, development, compliance to customer and non-customer requirements, and transfer to production. Directing outputs of team, project, or business activity, often across locations. Providing leadership direction, determining and developing approach to solutions by coordinating multiple resources to solve complex problems. Understanding how the needs of other parts of the business and aspects of the external environment may impact their area of responsibility. Leading design reviews, assigning and reviewing action items, or delegating these tasks. Ensuring regulatory/statutory/legislative compliance for all project work. Acting as a mentor in the engineering organization. Being accountable for the success of a project or activity. Making decisions independently, within a clear program of action. Experience: Recognized internally for expertise in the ophthalmic surgical device/science/technology industry. Possessing and applying comprehensive knowledge and providing expert input to complex assignments. Applying advanced principles, theories, and concepts within a clear framework. Having work experience contributing to the formation of new principles and concepts for new product research and/or development. Proven ability to develop solutions for unusually complex problems that are highly original, leading edge, and innovative. Providing comprehensive advice on a wide range of issues within a single discipline or field of knowledge. Requiring evaluation, interpretation, and judgment to select the right course of action. Interacting with senior personnel on complex or significant technical matters, often requiring coordination across organizational lines. Expert knowledge of ISO, FDA, MDD, and regulations applicable to the design and development of medical devices. Able to develop solutions to complex problems that require the use of creativity and originality. Robust process management, problem-solving skills, and superior presentation capabilities. What You'll Bring to Alcon: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school + 15 yrs; Assoc. + 11 yrs; M.S. + 4 yrs; PhD + 3 yrs). The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English. 7 years of relevant experience.
