We are seeking a meticulous and detail-oriented professional to join our team as a Tax Auditor in our Tax Administration. Be responsible for preparing comprehensive reports and providing clear guidance and support to a variety of stakeholders, including business owners and government employees. Responsibilities: Analyze reports, correspondence, history, and other records to determine accounts to be audited. Review, edit, verify, and prepare assessment and financial information to ensure the accuracy and accountability of assessments and revenues for special sales tax programs; prepare reports on assessment activities. Conduct field and desk audits of business personal property listings, prepared food and beverage, room occupancy, and gross sales receipts tax reports. Analyze and review applications for exemptions of business personal property equipment under tax certification programs and other exemptions for compliance with North Carolina General Statutes. Prepare formal audit reports and letters summarizing findings and directing taxpayers on follow-up actions regarding refunds and appeals. Provide general and technical assistance to business owners, County employees, and the public regarding business personal property taxes, audit assessments, the auditing process, and related information. Maintain and process assessment and financial information for reporting purposes related to outside audit programs; provide training, guidance, and assistance; coordinate with other departments on tax-related information. Examine financial documents, reconstruct income data when necessary, prepare data for entry of complex business personal property listings, and identify discrepancies between listings and accounting records. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited two-year college or technical school with a degree in business, finance, accounting, or related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience and/or training that includes tax assessment and auditing work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Tax Listing and Assessing and the NC Department of Revenue Personal Property Appraisal and Assessment course within 24 months of hiring date. Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of Cumberland County as such pertains to the performance of the essential duties of Tax Auditor. Knowledge of terminology and related professional languages used within the department as such pertains to work responsibilities. Knowledge of principles and practices of tax assessment and auditing for the purpose of administering the auditing of business personal property, special sales tax programs and other assessment programs. Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the essential duties and responsibilities of the position. Knowledge of the organization of the department, and of related departments and agencies. Ability to understand the occupational hazards and safety precautions required to perform the essential functions of the work. Ability to maintain cooperative and effective relationships with intra- and interdepartmental personnel, as well as any external entities with which position interacts.
