ABOUT THE JOB:

The Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Engineering & Operations (DTEO) is looking for an Engineer to provide traffic engineering support for the Traffic Engineering Studies Section that would include handling traffic safety issues within a designated portion of the county in support of the County's Vision Zero goals.

Duties include:

  • Investigating and managing traffic safety improvement requests from other government agencies, residents, members of the county council, community groups and associations, and the general public.
  • Reviewing new and re-developments for traffic safety impacts and needs.
  • Performing and overseeing consultant-performed assessments and studies.
  • Designing and overseeing consultant-designed engineering plans.
  • Managing and coordinating construction activity related to traffic safety improvements around Montgomery County.
WHO WE ARE SEEKING :

The ideal candidate is a detailed-oriented problem-solver who can create innovative solutions.Good organizational skills are essential to tracking and managing projects.Good interpersonal and communication skills are a significant advantage to a person in this position.Computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office applications, are desired, along with good customer service skills to help resolve residents' concerns.

The selected candidate must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team or in group settings to meet established goals.Speaking clearly and distinctively with a diverse population and over a two-way radio is essential.

The position requires work schedule flexibility and may require occasional after-hours and overtime work.The incumbent must be accessible after hours if immediate system support is needed.This job requires the employee to travel to various job sites on a regular basis.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION :

This position requires the ability to attend meetings during non-business hours or perform work at locations outside the office.

This position requires the possession of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license and the ability to drive a county vehicle to perform traffic engineering field work including visiting construction projects to perform field inspections and supervise work projects.

To ensure a positive workplace and to comply with federal, state and County laws, the incumbent is responsible for completing mandatory trainings within the first three to six months or within the specified timeframe.

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE:

If Filled at Engineer II: One (1) year of experience in an engineering field appropriate to transportation or traffic safety.

If Filled at Engineer III: Three (3) years of experience in an engineering field appropriate to transportation or traffic safety.

ALL LEVELS - EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related discipline appropriate to the assigned position.Registration as a Professional Engineer may substitute for the degree .

ALL LEVELS - EQUIVALENCY:

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, provided such combination includes at least 60 accredited semester hours (or an equivalent amount of accredited professional training) in engineering or related courses appropriate to the assigned position.

ALL LEVELS - LICENSE:

Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver's license from the applicant's state of residence.

Preferred Criteria

There are no Preferred Criteria . All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated Qualified, placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for an interview. Employees meeting the minimum qualifications who are the same grade or higher will be placed on the Eligible List as a "Transfer" candidate and may be considered for an interview.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
  • Oral and written communication regarding traffic engineering and safety issues
  • Traffic engineering program review and analysis
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Pedestrian, bicycle, and traffic safety projects
  • Overseeing professional services/managing consultants
  • Knowledge of standards and traffic engineering applications
  • Review and approval of new and re-development and roadway improvement construction plans
  • Field work investigations related to traffic safety and operation
