Major Duties and Responsibilities The Individual Life Underwriter plays a crucial role in providing accessible insurance solutions to a wide range of customers, often with simplified underwriting requirements. Their primary focus is to quickly and accurately assess applicants' eligibility for coverage, making insurance more attainable for those who may not qualify for traditional policies. Participate in a life underwriting training program under the direction of their director. Review simplified issue insurance applications, which typically require less extensive medical and financial information. Review traditional issue insurance applications. Underwrite applications with an approval limit up to $1,000,000. Evaluate and analyze insurance applications to determine eligibility for coverage by assessing the level of risk involved from an applicant's risk factors, such as age, health condition, lifestyle, etc. Request underwriting information appropriately, considering both the requirement cost relative to the premium and the need to approve applications promptly. Make impromptu assessments based on limited information provided by the agent. The assessments should be competitive yet comply with established guidelines. Conduct case audits to ensure goals and objectives for quality service are being met. Assist with the development of underwriting data rules. Stay updated on industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes that may impact underwriting practices by reading industry articles, and by participating in underwriting educational programs. Meet individual performance objectives and contribute towards the attainment of department goals (time service, quality, unit costs, customer service, etc.) Observe and practice appropriate confidentiality with all sensitive information. Calculate figures and amounts such as rates, ratios and percentages. Collaborate with other departments, including distribution and new business teams, to provide guidance and support in achieving the company's financial objectives. Maintain clear and accurate records of underwriting decisions, assessments, and applicant information. Contact applicants, agents, and/or policyholders to provide assistance, additional information, and/or clarification when necessary. Ensure that underwriting decisions adhere to industry regulations, company policies, and legal requirements. Provide training, guidance, and mentorship to junior underwriters to help them develop their skills and knowledge. Industry designations such as FLMI, FALU, CLU highly preferred. Job Qualifications Bachelor's degree and/or 2-3 years' experience in the individual life insurance underwriting industry required, with a proven track record of sound decision-making. Knowledge of life insurance products required, including knowledge of insurance regulations and industry standards related to simplified issue policies. AALU designation required. Experience with automated rules engines and simplified issue business highly preferred. Key Competencies Ability to relate to and communicate clearly with all levels within the organization; both verbally and in writing and deal quickly and effectively with changing priorities; flexible and adaptable Microsoft Office skills. Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration and relationship building skills with experience working on a virtual team. This job requires the proficiency to read, interpret, analyze, and summarize medical records, lab tests and other medical studies and documents. The incumbent is required to formulate decisions and recommendations based on these factors. Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology is preferred but is not required. Must be able to pay close attention to details and have good reasoning, decision making and organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities, analyze complex problems and suggest appropriate solutions as required. Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
