CAMPUS SECURITY/SAFETY SPECIALIST

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision of the Superintendent or Designee, to identify potential problems regarding welfare, safety and/or security of students, personnel, visitors and/or site; maintaining safety on campus by enforcing disciplinary policies and regulations; communicating information and responding to inquires. Facilitates communication between students and staff to enhance understanding and promote a secure environment; and performs related duties as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities:

The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class;

  • Conduct investigations of any incident occurring on school grounds as directed by Principal or designee.
  • Patrols school buildings, yards, parking areas and adjacent areas for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, deterring crime and monitoring safety issues.; circulates on and adjacent to school campus to prevent altercations and campus disorder. May be called to various sites on an "as needed" basis.
  • Observes and checks students or visitors who appear to be loitering and are out of class and determines appropriate action; checks and locks doors, windows and gates as needed; operates a two-way radio as needed.
  • Supervises student conduct to prevent vandalism, theft and other illegal activities; to include prevention of drug and alcohol use and weapons. Under direction of administrator, work in cooperation with faculty, and law enforcement agencies for the security and protection of students, non students and staff on school grounds.
  • Effectively manage student behavior in a school site setting.
  • Controls crowds at special events to provide for physical safety of people and to prevent fights, property damage and misconduct.
  • Assists in directing emergency evacuations and other activities relating to the safety of individuals; observes and reports hazards or activities that might result in negligence or legal charges against the District or its personnel related to the treatment or safety of youth.
  • Participate as a member of the District Safety Committee and attend scheduled meetings
  • Escorts students to the school administrator's office.
  • Performs investigations related to crimes or potential crimes.
  • Responds to teacher requests for assistance in the classroom.
  • May be called to assist in crime or safety incidents throughout the District as needed.
  • Participate in ongoing training activities related to security and safety.
  • Communicates district policies and enforcement procedures to students, personnel and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding and the potential consequences of violation.
Ability to:
  • Assure student compliance with school and District policies and regulations.
  • Prepare records and reports involving incidents, field interviews, accidents, vandalism, crime, gangs and student detention.
  • Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Perform duties with patience, tact and good judgment within established guidelines.
  • Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with students and staff.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Observe situations and accurately determine effective courses of action.
  • Must be able to be trusted with confidential information.
  • Supervise and direct students in a friendly, but authoritative manner and work cooperatively with faculty and staff

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Completion of 12th grade or equivalent
  2. Valid California Driver's License
  3. CPR/First Aid Certification
  4. Possession of or willingness to pursue within 6 months of employment at least one Security/Safety certification such as: NCI Training (Non Violent Crisis Intervention), POST (Peace Officer Standards Training), Bullying Prevention Training. Ongoing additional training may be required as requested by the Superintendent or Designee.
  5. California state penal code sections related to adolescents.
  6. Minimum of 1 year experience of conducting investigations and writing reports
Knowledge of:
  1. California Education Code 48900 (student discipline)
  2. Record keeping techniques.
  3. Basic investigation techniques.
  4. Health and safety regulations relevant to a safe school environment.
  5. Social behavior of adolescents.
Essential Job Funcitons:
  1. Visual ability to read handwritten or typed documents, and the display screen of various office equipment and machines
  2. Able to conduct verbal conversation
  3. Able to hear normal range verbal conversation (approximately 60 decibels)
  4. Able to sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend and walk
  5. Able to stand or walk for sustained periods of time.
  6. Able to climb slopes, stairs, steps, ramps and ladders
  7. Able to lift up to 50 pounds
  8. Able to carry up to 50 pounds
