Food R&D Internship

ABOUT E.A. SWEEN COMPANY

Family-owned since 1955 and headquartered in Eden Prairie, MN, E.A. Sween Company proudly makes over 80 million sandwiches per year, distributing them all over the country through Wholesale and Combined Distribution Centers.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

An R&D internship at E.A. Sween Company will provide students with a food related academic background, the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to a business environment. As an R&D intern, this position is responsible for supporting R&D project managers with various tasks and projects. It is part time, 16-24 hours a week and lasts for 6 months. The internship can be tailored to your school schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

  • Product Development
      • Assist in modifying and improving existing products and recipes. Accurately document and maintain recipes in recipe books and other files.
      • Participate in a cross functional team to develop and launch new product ideas.

  • Document cuttings and evaluations
  • Coordinate microbiological testing of new items
  • Coordinate sample preparation for sensory and preference testing
  • Assist with sensory and preference testing
    • Prepare and send out prototypes and or samples to customers or sales team as needed
    • Plan and execute shelf life studies
    • Gather ingredients for sample builds


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in Food Science, Nutrition or closely related science
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Excel, Word.
  • Must be able to work on multiple projects independently at one time, handle deadlines, confidential information and interruptions in the work process.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, especially with regard to food, nutrition, safety and regulatory information.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work well with team members.
  • All hires will need to successfully pass a drug screen and background check

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • 25% of time spent in the production/manufacturing environment.
  • Must be able to work well with various levels of employees and diverse cultures.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25lbs waist high.
  • Required to sample products including bread, meat and cheese.
