The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

Laboratory Manager (grant funded) will be responsible for managing organizational, administrative, grants management (pre- and post-award) and financial services in Prof. Kam Leong's Laboratory to ensure efficient and effective operation of the lab.

Responsibilities

  • (20%) Purchasing:
    • Plan and monitor lab inventory, order supplies and services for the Lab, generate and maintain receiving records; Prepare, monitor and reconcile the lab procurement card (p-card)
  • (15%) Accounts Payable:
    • Receive, track and process or submit for payment invoices, including grant subaward invoices.
  • (20%) Payroll and Personnel Management:
    • Supervise assigned lab support staff, student workers, casual or temporary employees, including approval of their timesheets in TLAM.
    • Prepare regular detailed payroll allocations for all lab personnel and submit to the BME Department main office.
    • Initiate payroll Cost Transfers, as needed, and prepare justifications.
    • Maintain up-to-date effort allocation records for the lab personnel and assist with the annual Effort Certification.
    • Prepare and submit new personnel appointment/reappointment requests and related documentation to the BME Department main office.
  • (15%) Financial planning and monitoring:
    • Prepare and submit annual and quarterly Fiscal Year budgets for the Lab;
    • Provide monthly monitoring and reconciliation of expenses vs budgets; report to the Principal Investigator / Lab Director.
    • Resolve issues and discrepancies.
  • (15%) Grants Management:
    • Develop budgets for grant proposals; support the Principal Investigator / Lab Director in preparation of grant proposals (pre-award); assemble and coordinate submission of grant proposals with CU Sponsored Projects Administration; organize set-up of new grant awards and budgets, monitor and analyze grant expenses, initiate cost transfers as needed.
    • Prepare grant-related reports to the University and Sponsor Agencies as needed, including quarterly grant attestations, grant progress reports and close-out reports to CU Sponsored Projects Finance.
  • (15%) Maintenance of functionality of the laboratory and equipment (cell culture hoods, bioreactors, incubators) including scheduling interactions with vendors, repair specialists, and outside vendors. Ensure compliance with policies and procedures governing lab operations such as EH&S.
  • As needed - Maintenance of lab websites and project database.
  • As needed - Supervision of chemical safety and disposal of hazardous laboratory waste.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in STEM plus at least 2 years of related experience required.

  • Interest in scientific research and experience in an academic laboratory management.

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, as well as in oral and written communication are a must.

  • The candidate must be detail oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks and to interact well with a large project team in an academic setting.

  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Quantitative skills are essential for this position.

  • Must be able to work interactively and collaboratively with faculty, research staff, University offices, and external granting agencies.

  • Must be very detail-oriented and must be able to prioritize tasks.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational, and computer skills required.

  • Advanced-level proficiency in Excel, Word and other related software required.

  • Must be flexible in terms of working hours in keeping with changing priorities and deadlines.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Must be detail oriented.
