Seasonal Maintenance Worker to work fulltime in the Streets/Stormwater/Sewer division of the City of Port Townsend Public Works Department.Seasonal terms last six months.Seasonal positions assist our regular work crews with maintaining safe and attractive streets, parks, and City facilities for our residents, visitors, and staff. $18-20/hour, 40 hours per week, eligible for overtimeNo medical benefits, but accrues 1 hour of sick time per 40 hours worked & able to access City's Employee Assistance Program (EAP)Working hours: variable to include evenings and weekendsQualified applicants are encouraged to apply soon JOB SUMMARYPerforms a variety of tasks including but not limited to maintenance of all park facilities, janitorial duties in public buildings, repair work to various streets, wastewater collection and stormwater collection. Position will also include trash pickup, weeding in the right-of-way, painting, trail maintenance and special events preparation.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPerforms various maintenance, landscaping, and custodial tasks to provide care and upkeep of parks, open space, trails and facilities.Safely operates equipment such as riding and push lawn mowers, line trimmers, backpack blowers, edgers and hedgers.Safely operates portable equipment and small hand and power tools necessary to maintain City properties.Assists in patching roads, loading, raking and shoveling asphalt.Assists in the maintenance and repairs of wastewater and storm water facilities.Performs a variety of routine repair and maintenance tasks on equipment.Serves as a flagger for traffic control.Assists in the painting of street parking and crosswalks.Sets out and take down traffic control devices.Manually removes unwanted weeds from rights-of-way and developed landscapes and/or native areas.Cleans and maintains public restrooms, picnic shelters, picnic tables, garbage cans and other facilities.Tracks work activities in online work order systemOther related duties as assigned by the Crew Chief or his/her designee.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESGeneral knowledge of the ground maintenance and landscaping and custodial practices are preferred but not required.Ability to operate equipment and tools following oral and written instructions.Ability to adhere to WISHA and DOSH health and safety requirements in the workplace.Ability to maintain daily work activity records using a computer.QUALIFICATIONS RequiredAny equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire.Valid Washington driver's license and ability to maintain a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier.Must be able to perform physical work outdoors under all weather conditions.Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public and co-workers.Must pass criminal background check.PreferredPrevious experience working for a parks and recreation department/organization/agency; horticulture experience including local plant identification skills; equipment maintenance experience; custodial experience.Experience in a public setting.Previous experience performing general maintenance work using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, small power equipment, etc.Washington State Flagger certification course.First AidCPR certification.WORKING CONDITIONSDuties are performed primarily in the outdoors during all types of weather.Walking for extended periods of time.Repeated bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.Ability to lift, push and pull 60 pounds.Vision and hearing at level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected).Physical and visual ability sufficient to perform required duties effectively and safely and to safely operate required equipment and City vehicle as needed.Requires full range of motor skills and dexterity to operate handheld tools.The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
