Responsible for planning, developing, and coordinating all hospital safety functions relative to the seven functional areas of the Environment of Care: Safety Management, Life Safety Management, Emergency Preparedness Management, Hazardous Material/Waste Management, Security Management, Medical Equipment Management, and Utility Systems Management. Serves as the hospital liaison with regulatory bodies and assigned accrediting bodies such as The Joint Commission.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Formulates and implements system environment of care/safety program. Conducts and assists outside agencies in site inspections to assess program compliance.
  2. Organizes and chairs the Hospital Environment of Care Committee (Safety Committee). Participates as responsible individual for the Environment of Care Manual on the Hospital Policy and Procedure Committee. Report out, as appropriate, to the hospital Process Improvement Steering Committee and to the Board, Quality Improvement. Actively participates on the Local Emergency Preparedness Committee.
  3. Provides educational support to Basic Employee Orientation. Coordinates the Annual Environment of Care Fair.
  4. Serves as hospital safety officer.
  5. Oversees and directs the accreditation readiness program for ongoing preparedness for certification or surveys.
  6. Maintains current knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and accreditation standards, and monitors advancement in technologies and processes to ensure organizational adaptation and compliance.
  7. Ensures compliance with all regulatory agency occupational/environmental health and safety laws and accrediting body standards to include OSHA/MIOSHA, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
  8. Collaborates with other departments and committees to identify health and safety trends and reduce employee injuries and illnesses. Performs accident prevention and investigation activities.
  9. Ensures environment of care quality by proper plant, technology and safety management.
  10. Maintains cooperative relationships with safety personnel form other institutions and regulatory agencies.
  11. Collects, analyzes, and maintains data concerning safety/environment of care management issues, deficiencies, and improvement opportunities. Drafts and assists in implementing recommendations for improvement.
  12. Performs other related duties as required and directed.


Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in industrial and environmental health management or related area.
  • Three years of experience in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating systems programs.
  • Experience managing health and safety programs in a health care setting required.
  • Certified Healthcare Safety Professional or equivalent. (Must obtain certification within 12 months of employment).
Preferred:
  • Quality improvement experience preferred.
