The role

At SFM our open-door policy is essential in recognizing business issues as they rise and creates a nimble business environment makes it easier to do business with us. The Underwriting Technical Analyst works closely with key stakeholders within the organization providing underwriting-related technical support to staff in application of underwriting management policies, practices and procedures related to Workers' Comp Insurance policies. You will work with our multifunctioning teams which consist of underwriters and claims reps, guiding training activities for all underwriters in the company while mentoring less experienced staff. Collaborating with Senior Management and developing underwriting best practices and identifying trends on business profitability is a key function in this role, as is reviewing internal underwriting files ensuring that best practices and quality standards are met. As SFM expands their footprint, you will also participate in reviewing state requirements for compliance purposes. What you will be doing

Business and Operations

  1. Reviews and provides guidance regarding trend analysis on business profitability by broker, product, class code and other criteria as appropriate.
  2. Manages data issues between SFM and rating organizations (MWCIA, NCCI, WCRB).
  3. Manages and organizes resources from other reference materials (AM Best, FC&S Manuals, & NCCI).
  4. Participates in industry associations and conferences related to underwriting activities. Maintains appropriate interactions with persons both within the organization and externally.
  5. Collaborates with the VP & Director of Underwriting to establish, modify and document underwriting management policies, practices and procedures and communicates these best practices to management and the underwriting staff while maintaining appropriate interactions with co-workers and external clients/business partners.
  6. Maintains the online underwriting manual.
  7. Develops knowledge and expertise in establishing underwriting authority in an effort to minimize risk exposure.
  8. Collaborates with the VP & Director of Underwriting in reviewing applications in excess of underwriter authority to determine whether to accept, modify or reject the risk.
  9. Identifies, develops and implements business solutions to business needs and special projects. This may include a heavy emphasis on technology.
  10. Participates, implements, and leads the development of needs based technical resources (on-line reference, databases, newsletters, seminars, etc.) to assist the underwriting management process.
  11. Identifies, monitors, and advises improvement opportunities and/or deficiencies with the Account Management process and assists with developing enhancements/improvements to the process.
  12. Directs the agency management system to include but not limited to, agency/producer licensing, agency set-up and contracting, agency sales and mergers, contact maintenance and W-9 updates.
Staff Development & Training
  1. Identifies training issues through the use of internal file review, questions and routine dialogue through meetings or one-on-one discussions. Works with the Learning & Development Specialist to build and enhance training materials and programs to increase technical knowledge of all staff.
  2. Coaches underwriters who require additional technical and/or efficiency training, and trains underwriter trainees in underwriting practices and rules. Acts as a resource to business unit managers and team leaders on technical issues.
  3. Acts as a resource to business unit managers and team leaders on technical issues. Provides feedback to the business unit managers and team leaders on the technical performance of employees.


What We will Love About you
  • Bachelor's degree in business, insurance or related field; in lieu of a Bachelor's Degree, four years' of applicable work experience is acceptable.
  • Five or more years' experience in underwriting with an emphasis in workers compensation and/or commercial lines insurance.
  • Professional insurance designations (CPCU, ARM) preferred.
  • Effective organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and work with minimal direction.
  • Proven ability to analyze and gather complex information
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to train and teach others.
  • Strong working knowledge of state applicable Workers' Compensation rules and regulations, NCCI rules and its application to underwriting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of insurance finance.
  • Ability to evaluate accounts for acceptability and insurability.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in order to interact in a team environment and to collaborate with other business units and a diverse group of customers.
  • Ability to assimilate, understand and analyze information from a variety of sources.
  • Strong math skills to calculate and evaluate policy premiums, loss ratios and retentions.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates positive teaming skills focused on team results.
  • Excellent Problem-solving and decision-making skills with an eye for detail.

  • Must be willing to come into the office as needed.


Physical Requirements

Regular attendance is required. Work takes place in a semi paperless environment within an office setting, either on business premises or other remote location, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers, which requires being stationary for extended periods of time. Will come into the office when asked to do so. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and work with close vision. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Work is performed indoors with little to no exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions.
