JOB DESCRIPTION: xEMU Spacesuit Safety Engineer

Advanced Extravehicular Mobility Unit (xEMU) Safety engineering activities in support of the NASA Safety and Mission Assurance Engineering Contract II (SMAEC II) in Houston, TX.

xEMU Safety Engineers are responsible for performing hazard, FMEA, and associated risk assessments on the new spacesuit design currently under development at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC). This position will entail the authoring of required safety paperwork (HRs, NCRs, FMEAs, CILs) for official NASA review and approval toward final acceptance and certification of the new spacesuit. These functions are performed in direct support of the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) Directorate (NA), the NASA JSC EVA Office (XX), and the xEMU Project Team. xEMU Safety engineers are expected to become intimately familiar with the design and operation of the xEMU, the safety requirements the xEMU project must follow in support of its demonstration mission aboard the ISS vehicle, and the supporting FMEA, CILs, Hazard Reports, Procedures, and Certification data for the xEMU system. xEMU Safety engineers are responsible for representing the safety position or informing the S&MA Representative of the safety position at various S&MA, XX, and xEMU boards and panels. Extensive oral and written communications are expected to occur with multiple layers of SAIC and NASA management, including briefings of xEMU safety products to ISS boards/panels and xEMU risks to NASA Headquarters Office of S&MA (OSMA). xEMU Safety engineers are expected to function as an integral member of the xEMU engineering community.

xEMU Safety efforts in developing xEMU safety products will be in tandem with the standard lifecycle design process followed by NASA Engineering and will support deliverables as necessary at key milestone reviews, such as SRR, PDR, and CDR. As the spacesuit design matures, xEMU Safety may have additional involvement in ground testing activities and in the review of corresponding test results as they apply to hazard/FMEA control verifications. xEMU Safety will support routine xEMU project-related meetings as required to remain cognizant of changes to account for in the safety assessment as the spacesuit design evolves. xEMU Safety will be expected to voice any safety concern and any opportunity to improve overall safety/reliability of the spacesuit design. As the design matures and qual/cert testing begins, xEMU Safety will monitor anomalies and assess as necessary for potential impacts to the xEMU safety assessment. In addition to the xEMU Safety responsibilities mentioned above, this position also includes project management tasks involving tracking of product delivery schedules, identifying resource issues, providing a status to management, and assisting with tasking/budget definitions. Travel is expected to be minimal.

xEMU Safety engineers are required to complete a training/certification curriculum, and once certified, serve as mentor to other xEMU Safety or cross-training personnel during their on-the-job training. Cross-training opportunities may be available dependent on funding and resource availability. Example secondary certifications are in the following areas: EMU Safety, EVA Quality Engineering, EVA Safety Operations, and GFE Safety.

REQUIREMENTS: xEMU Spacesuit Safety Engineer

Education:

BS Degree in Aerospace Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Degree may be considered depending on experience)

Year(s) of Experience:

3+ years providing Safety / Reliability support for complex Space Systems

Required Skills and Traits: Development of Safety or Reliability related products such as hazard reports, FMEAs, and Fault Trees. Familiar with NASA, DOD, or other industry safety, reliability, and quality processes. Must possess excellent oral or written skills. Must possess good interpersonal skills. Self-starter, self-motivated. Experience supporting real-time EVA/EMU operations, ground testing, and/or crew training. Ability to master S&MA and Engineering processes for the certification of EMU equipment.
