Company Overview:

MP Materials (the "Company") is the largest producer of rare earth materials in the Western Hemisphere. The Company, which is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, owns and operates the Mountain Pass Rare Earth Mine and Processing Facility ("Mountain Pass"). Mountain Pass is located 50 miles south of Las Vegas and is the only rare earth mining and processing site of scale in North America. The Company is also constructing a rare earth metal, alloy and magnet manufacturing facility in Fort Worth, Texas, where the Company anticipates manufacturing permanent magnets. Certain rare earth elements serve as critical inputs for the rare earth magnets inside the electric motors and generators powering carbon-reducing technologies such as hybrid and electric vehicles, wind turbines, drones, defense systems, robotics and many other high-growth, advanced technologies.

Position Overview:
The Director of Tax will be responsible for overseeing the tax functions of the Company. Specific focus will be on the provision for income taxes, federal and state income taxes, and tax planning. The position will have extensive interaction with the leadership team, various internal departments, and external auditors. The Director of Tax will also focus on quarterly and year-end tax provisions, forecasting, tax compliance, planning and research.

Essential Duties:
  • Oversee tax functions, activities, and requirements for the Company.
  • Identify and lead improvement of internal processes, including the use of tax technology tools to help automate workflows.
  • Prepare the quarterly and annual tax provision under ASC 740.
  • Prepare and review income tax disclosures and footnotes in alignment with SEC and PCAOB requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to internal controls and financial procedures in compliance with SOX.
  • Plan and manage the preparation of federal and state income tax returns and sales & use tax returns.
  • Monitor and model legislative changes and communicate impacts to the leadership team.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with requirements for incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act.
  • Interpret and research applicable implications of tax laws and the U.S. tax code.
  • Be a strategic business partner by providing guidance on proposed and enacted tax legislation, keeping abreast of tax law changes in the US and foreign jurisdictions to manage risk and identify potential planning opportunities.
  • Plan, direct, and execute various tax projects, including property taxes, sales and use taxes, and other tax-related topics.
  • Perform research, review, and prepare technical tax memorandums.
Other Functions:
  • Provide tax planning and research with respect to the Company's global business operations.
  • Act as liaison between tax, accounting, business, legal, finance and other departments to assist with identifying and resolving issues associated with transactions and projects.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly tax updates to present to executive leadership.
  • Manage external providers and local finance teams in the preparation of all jurisdictional income tax provisions including ensuring accurate and timely ASC 740 tax accounting and SEC disclosures.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in accounting and/or finance.
Desired Qualities:
  • Experience with public companies required and prior exposure to income tax provision, SOX, and other areas specific to public companies.
  • Excellent theoretical understanding and practical application skills of accounting.
  • Excellent research skills and experience using CCH, BNA, or oother research software.
  • Experience leading teams and working with external auditors and outside tax advisors.
  • Experience with incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act.
