Animal Care Technician

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine animal husbandry tasks such as cage changes, monitoring animal health and welfare.
  • Conduct daily animal checks to ensure well-being, including on weekends and holidays.
  • Perform health surveillance checks and report any irregularities in the animals or room conditions to the appropriate party.
  • Receive, identify, and properly house new animal shipments.
  • Perform rodent identification via tattooing, ear tagging, and microchipping.
  • Collect rodent body weights.
  • Assist with colony management tasks, including weaning, pairing, euthanasia, and sample collection for genotyping.
  • Enter data into colony management software.
  • Perform regular cleaning of the vivarium on a weekly, monthly, and annual basis.
  • Assist periodically with timed feeding.
  • Stock cage supplies and personal protective equipment (PPE) areas.
  • Maintain regular communication with staff.
  • Follow entry order and biosafety protocols.
  • Dispose of waste according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain animal racks and support equipment.
  • Administer basic animal health treatments under veterinary supervision.
  • Humanely euthanize animals when necessary.
  • Prepare and submit documentation, including records, census sheets, room logs, cage cards, and inventories.
  • Follow SOPs and guidelines for both personnel and animal safety.

Desired Education and Skills:

  • High School diploma required.
  • ALAT certification preferred, or ability to obtain ALAT within 2 years.
  • Experience with laboratory animals preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Availability to work weekends and holidays for vivarium coverage.
  • Strong adherence to lab methods and SOPs.
  • Passion for animal welfare.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to follow verbal instructions.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize workload.
  • Competent in understanding moderately complex SOPs and protocols.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, stoop, climb, and stand for extended periods.
  • Comfortable wearing full PPE (face mask, coveralls, gloves) for several hours daily.
