Job Summary and Qualifications

The Lead Anesthesia Technician plays a crucial role in delivering top-quality, patient-centered care by providing essential anesthesia support during surgical procedures. They are responsible for anticipating and fulfilling the needs of the anesthesia clinician through meticulous preparation and maintenance of supplies, patient monitoring equipment, and anesthesia delivery systems. As a vital member of the perioperative team, the Lead Anesthesia Technician works closely with the circulating RN and the perioperative team to ensure a safe and optimal patient perioperative experience. Additionally, they are involved in training and mentoring new and current employees under the direction of the supervisor. It is their duty to ensure that any new processes, equipment, or changes are effectively communicated and taught to other Anesthesia Technicians.

  • Prepares and organizes equipment and supplies for scheduled and emergent cases in anesthetising locations. Review present and future surgical schedules to ensure anesthesia staff have the essential equipment and supplies necessary for routine and challenging cases.
  • Creates and maintains orderly, well-stocked anesthesia carts of all types, such as emergency airway and pediatric. Anticipates anesthetist's preferences for efficient setup.
  • Transports and sets up equipment needed for procedures, including laryngoscope blades, monitors, EKG cables, ETCO2 lines, pulse oximetry cables, temperature cables, and oxygen tanks/tubing. Assures equipment is decontaminated and in good working condition before each procedure.
  • Applies basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and principles of growth and development as required to assist in anesthesia preparation/supply selection.
  • Assists in the transfer, positioning, prepping and draping of patients for anesthetic procedures by facility standards. Assists with the placement of non-invasive monitoring devices, such as blood pressure cuff, EKG leads, and pulse oximeter probe.
  • Assists with higher-level patient prep, such as intubation or invasive line placement/monitoring, once competency/certification is confirmed and as governed by local, state, and federal regulation and per facility policy.
  • Assists Anesthesiologist during scheduled and emergent procedures as directed, including monitoring of vital signs or retrieving needed equipment and supplies.
  • Follows department procedures for proper procurement and handling of non-controlled medications, I.V. fluids, contrast media, and irrigating fluids in the surgical services area.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and co-workers. Utilizes appropriate chains of command to communicate pertinent information.
  • Contributes to performance improvement initiatives and works toward meeting and exceeding core measures, patient safety, and service excellence goals.
  • Serves as a positive role model and resource for peers. Shares knowledge with team members and ensures new processes, equipment, policies/procedures, etc. are communicated to the team promptly.
  • Assists in the hiring process by participating in the peer interview process.
  • Develops orientation manual and assists with orientation of new personnel. Serves as a positive role model and resource for peers.
  • Meets with new hire Anesthesia Techs at hospital-wide orientation. Precepts all new Anesthesia Techs to ensure unit expectations and standards are known and followed.
What qualifications you will need:

Experience

  • 3 years of experience as an Anesthesia Technologist in an operating room or critical care environment

Education

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent

Licenses and Certifications

  • Basic Life Support certification
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification - preferred
  • Anesthesia Tech license from ASATT - preferred
