About This Role:
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated HR Manager
to be the first hire on the HR team. As a HR Manager at Short Story, you'll
work directly with the founders to oversee all HR activities and operations.
Our team is growing quickly and we are hiring across many functions. We're looking for an optimist with grit and determination who is excited about the challenges of a growing startup.
You'll direct all HR operations, including recruitment, selection, compensation, payroll, benefit administration, employee training/development, performance review management, and employee relations
Create and optimize the use of HR tools and processes, train management in best practices in all aspects of HR
Develop roadmaps and execute key programs on culture, engagement, and team building
Triage questions and support our employees to resolve any issues
Develop dashboards measuring the success of people operation by creating and maintaining metrics for every facet of HR
Wear many hats in assisting with other HR core competencies
Develop and implement programs in a manner that ensures cost effectiveness, market competitiveness and internal equity
Organize team-building events and keep company culture top of mind
Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in HR and employment laws
Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance. Interpret appropriate laws and policies and advise management accordingly
Successfully deliver on all deadlines and flawlessly execute in a fast-paced, startup environment
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of experience as an HR Manager or similar capacity in multi-state operations in a fast paced dynamic environment
Ability to understand key business drivers within a multi-state business model
Expertise in recruiting and partnering with hiring managers to expedite closing of all open requisitions. Assist in building a solid recruiting operation system
Experience in HRIS and running a metrics driven HR organization
Entrepreneurial drive, excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills is needed
Bachelor’s degree
SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) or SPHR current certification preferred
Ability to work at our SF office in Mission Bay (preferred)
Strong experience of wage and hourly compliance in the state of California, Required

Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to think analytically while working in a fast-paced startup environment
Entrepreneurial mindset: you must be comfortable and confident where your ideas and efforts will have a direct impact on company processes
Expertise in verbal and written communication with internal and external stakeholders
Previous experience working in ecommerce or a tech startup is a plus
Eager to learn and excited to help build a company from the ground up
