We are seeking a highly skilled Functional Safety Engineer with expertise in software safety for the railway sector to join our team in Charleroi. The successful candidate will ensure the highest safety standards for software systems within railway projects, without direct team management responsibilities.
- The role:
Your responsibilities will include:
- Lead the safety assessment of software in railway systems, ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards (e.g., EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129).
- Serve as the technical authority on safety matters, guiding the engineering team through the lifecycle of safety-critical projects.
- Conduct and oversee risk assessments, safety analysis, and mitigation strategies for software components in railway control systems, with a specific focus on RBC (Radio Block Center) systems.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including systems engineering, software development, and validation teams, to ensure the integration of safety requirements into the design and development process.
- Provide expertise in the development and validation of safety plans, safety cases, and other safety-related documentation.
- Ensure adherence to industry standards and regulations, including CENELEC norms and applicable EU regulations.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to safety processes and methodologies.
- Requirements:

- A masters degree in Industrial Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 6 years of experience in functional safety engineering, particularly within the railway sector.
- In-depth knowledge of RBC (Radio Block Center) systems.
- Familiarity with relevant standards such as EN 50126, EN 50128, EN 50129, and Regulation (EU) No 402/2013.
- Strong technical background in safety analysis, risk assessment, and safety case development.
- Experience in software safety for railway systems, particularly in safety-critical environments.
- Excellent communication skills in English (proficiency in Spanish is an advantage)
- Experience with ETCS (European Train Control System) is a significant plus.
- Proficiency in tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and safety analysis software.
