The Product Development Mechanical Engineer at Manitex specializes in the design, development, and optimization of welded fabricated structures, hydraulic systems, and control systems for heavy mobile equipment. Leveraging expertise in mechanical engineering principles, the engineer ensures the structural integrity and performance of products while adhering to federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) and national highway transportation regulations. Applying fundamental mechanical engineering principles to design and engineer mobile cranes alongside their integral components. Integrating design methodologies aimed at enhancing manufacturability and serviceability throughout the product lifecycle. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, they collaborate closely with the product management team to incorporate the voice of the customer (VOC) into the development of new and improved product offerings. Additionally, the engineer actively participates in design for manufacturability processes and contributes to operational excellence transformation initiatives, ensuring compliance with manufacturing and delivery quality requirements.
Provide comprehensive two and three-dimensional representations of product designs, facilitating communication and visualization for stakeholders, utilizing Draftsite and Solidworks.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Design and optimize welded fabricated structures for heavy mobile equipment, ensuring durability, strength, and compliance with industry standards.
Develop hydraulic systems and control systems, focusing on efficiency, reliability, and functionality for various applications.
Conduct detailed weight analysis studies to optimize weight distribution and axle loads, ensuring compliance with federal bridge and national highway transportation regulations.
Develop truck chassis requirements and components to verify quality, functionality, and alignment with design specifications.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of components and systems into final products.
Support design for manufacturability processes, optimizing production processes and minimizing manufacturing costs.
Contribute to operational excellence initiatives, leveraging expertise in fabrication, welding, and manufacturing assembly operations.
Participate in ISO 9001/quality management systems, environmental health and safety initiatives, 5S practices, and lean manufacturing/continuous improvement processes.
Adhere to company policies and procedures, promoting accountability, professionalism, and a culture of excellence.

Education & Experience:
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Systems Engineering
Expertise in designing and optimizing welded fabricated structures for heavy mobile equipment, ensuring structural integrity and compliance
with industry standards.
Proficiency in engineering hydraulic systems and control systems, focusing on efficiency, reliability, and functionality for diverse applications.
Strong analytical skills to conduct detailed weight analysis studies and optimize weight distribution and axle loads.
Knowledge of federal bridge and national highway transportation regulations governing heavy mobile equipment.
Familiarity with manufacturing processes, including fabrication, welding, and assembly operations.
Effective communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
Commitment to operational excellence, quality management systems, environmental health and safety practices, and continuous improvement.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Previous experience utilizing a stage gate/phase gate new product development process.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) for basic documentation and reporting tasks.

Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to work with international inquiries and provide adequate response to their needs.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
