About The Jewish Community Foundation
The Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) partners with individuals, families and community organizations to help them achieve their philanthropic goals. During fiscal year 2022, JCF awarded and facilitated over $18.9 million in 3,382 grants to more than 1,150 Jewish and general organizations locally and nationally. As a leading resource for philanthropy in the region, the Foundation manages approximately $260 million in assets and has facilitated over $458 million in grants over the past 20 years. JCF is renowned for its programs and services, highlighted by receiving the Nonprofit Connect Excellence in Impact Award in 2019.
Position Overview
The Director of Philanthropy is a full-time, exempt position that reports to the Foundation’s Executive Director. The Director of Philanthropy is responsible for developing, sustaining and expanding relationships with current and new donors and community partners. The Director of Philanthropy will direct efforts in generating and securing charitable gifts, build trust and ensure donor satisfaction with Foundation services and programs. The position will oversee expanding and diversifying the Foundation’s donor base, build an active pipeline of prospective donors, strengthen the organization’s capacity, secure endowment funds and oversee important JCF programming.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Fund Development and Donor Relations; Program Management; Governance; Community Leadership
Fund Development and Donor Relations
Lead efforts in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding a portfolio of prospects and donors in order to secure all types of funds, including endowments.
Design innovative outreach opportunities to connect all segments of the community to JCF.
Work with Professional Advisors in support of client’s charitable goals. Promote services of Foundation and manage outreach efforts to the Professional Advisory community.
Keep informed of developments in philanthropy, charitable gift planning and community foundations.
Plan and implement donor education and cultivation events.
Program Management
Key role in coordination of lifecycle giving programs as part of JCF’s Continuum of Giving.
Oversee Create a Jewish Legacy Program and supervision of Legacy Stewardship Manager.
Governance
Provide staff leadership for several JCF Board committees.
As needed, work with committee chairs to develop meeting agenda and materials.
Attend quarterly Board meetings and support overall meeting preparation efforts.
Community Leadership
Maintain a high professional profile by participating in events, seminars and conferences designed to strengthen and promote the field and the Foundation.
Represent the Foundation at Jewish and secular community events.
Attend programs and professional development opportunities to remain informed about the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.
Provide technical development assistance to nonprofits, including guidance in fundraising, planning, organizational development, program design, and volunteer leadership development.
Desired Skills and Experience
3-5 years of nonprofit development experience; demonstrated success in managing and forging relationships and closing major gifts.
Knowledge of the Kansas City nonprofit community, both Jewish and secular.
Knowledge of the Jewish community, culture, and practices.
Knowledge of planned giving techniques, Donor Advised Funds and community foundations.
Knowledge of best practices in philanthropic program design and educational events.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; the ability to create compelling presentations and to engage in meaningful conversations with a wide range of donors and community stakeholders.
Capacity to form visionary strategies to help donors achieve their philanthropic goals.
Creative, entrepreneurial approach to development. Strong organizational skills and a desire to work in a collaborative environment.
Ability to treat confidential information with a high level of discretion and professionalism.
High degree of integrity, energy and a passion for the mission of JCF and nonprofit work.
