Summary Position Statement:

The Development Director is responsible for working with the CEO, Board of Directors, grant writer, and Development Committee to plan and coordinate all aspects of fund development and public relations for Denali Family Services. The Development Director provides leadership on all fundraising initiatives including special events, major gifts, planned giving, sponsorships, capital campaigns, and donor cultivation. This position is responsible for identifying, organizing, and managing the fundraising activities of the agency with a focus on increasing the existing donor base and identifying new opportunities to obtain ongoing and increased support from corporations, public and private organizations, faith communities, and individuals.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive annual resource development plan with strategies for donors and prospects in each constituent group to be approved by the CEO and Board.
  • Provide reports to the CEO and the board which measure progress towards achieving the plan.
  • Broaden fundraising by developing approaches such as planned giving, solicitation of bequests, and endowment programs.
  • Create and implement strategies for donor development and cultivation which will provide a diverse and sustainable funding base.
  • Keep up to date on current fundraising programs, practices and procedures used in the nonprofit sector and inform leadership of items that would benefit Denali Family Services.
  • Create and implement major gifts program, planned giving program, and volunteer program.
  • Identify and pursue new sources of corporate funding in the form of major gifts.
  • Build and maintain relationships with major donors of all types, develop strategies for solicitation, and solicit or coordinate the solicitation by members of the leadership team, board members, or volunteers as appropriate.
  • Create and update collateral materials to support gift cultivation.
  • Develop and implement all aspects of direct donor mailings, appeal letters, and other donor contact as needed.
  • Manage a donor database and ensure that information is current and accurate.
  • Promptly acknowledge all gifts and donations.
  • Manage or oversee all fundraising events.
  • Promote fundraising events to the business community and provide support to those groups that want to host an event.
  • Work with appropriate staff and volunteers to ensure that all aspects of a successful fundraising event are coordinated towards a common goal.
  • Solicit and develop sponsors.
  • Develop and maintain media contacts with area media outlets.
  • Oversee and direct all media relations to include press releases, media alerts, social media communication, media production and general branding of the organizations and its programs.
  • Create marketing materials.
Position Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with two (2) or more years of experience in development or a closely related field. CFRE certification required within 18 months of hiring.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree from an accredited college or university with five (5) or more years of experience in development or a closely related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of tax planning principles and techniques that favor charitable giving.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
  • Demonstrated excellence in organizational, communication, and collaborative skills.
  • IT skills in Word, Excel, Canva (or other design software), and donor-management system.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform sedentary work. Visual acuity necessary to utilize a computer monitor throughout the course of a normal workday. Ability to perform repetitive keyboarding activities and operate general office equipment. Ability to communicate verbally, both in person and over the telephone. Ability to stand and move around for several hours when attending fundraising and networking events. Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a community mental health center and in a wide variety of community settings.

Other Requirements: Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification, continual proof of a valid Alaska Driver's License, maintain current vehicle insurance and registration on personal vehicle(s) used for company business, maintain a violation free driving record for the past year, maintain satisfactory criminal background record, have a negative TB test, and be at least 21 years old due to state licensing requirements.
