- GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Community Engagement Center (CEC) advances community engagement through a lens of social justice theory and social responsibility praxis, centering support around community-based courses, volunteering, and collaborative partnerships of faculty, students, and local community partners. The CEC aims to enhance the community-based research and teaching efforts of faculty and the socially responsible growth and development of course-based interns, volunteers, and work study students, to maintain respectful, reciprocal and quality collaborations with community partners.

Reporting to the CEC Assistant Director, under general supervision, the Program Coordinator, helps meet the dynamic needs of Pitzer faculty, students, staff, and partner sites. The Hecker Community Fellow assists Pitzer faculty teaching or developing Social Responsibility Praxis and Social Justice Theory courses with internship structure and management, as well as community partnership development and guidance, especially in relation to sustainable capacity-building.

The Program Coordinator manages two of the five CEC community engagement pillars and course-based connections along with student program coordinators. The Program Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of the annual CEC Orientation and Ethics Training which happens each fall. The PC must have introductory-level knowledge of evaluation and assessment practices; this will constitute roughly 40% of the responsibilities. PC is responsible for meeting coordination, taking and collating meeting minutes, and follow-up with partners, faculty, and students. This position also helps coordinate semester-based communications with faculty and partners regarding collaborations and opportunities.
- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Collaboratively identify ways CEC can support community engagement courses, including providing orientation and training for students, facilitating timely student clearance, helping students adhere to partner/course guidelines, tracking and reporting internship data, and providing timely communication with Assistant Director, CEC Managing Director, the CEC team, and any faculty, students, and partners regarding program progress and needs.
- Prepare a list of partner/ faculty needs for each semester to help make course-based connections
- Monitor student internship hours, maintain an intern-tracking database, organize and provide zoom access for remote engagement as needed, share information and timely updates with participants.
- Participate in providing specialized orientation on ethics and other needed training topics for students working at partner sites, stay abreast of internship progress, provide preparation and debrief meetings for participants as needed, and assist Assistant Director and Managing Director in providing field feedback through coaching student interns.
- Manage relationships to ensure program autonomy and help build capacity of the community partner site to function independently of CEC.
- Attend meetings and events in support of partner work to encourage a high level of engagement with students in these activities.
- Communicate regularly with partners about needs and help AD and MD to identify any potential gaps for needed programmatic adjustments with students or faculty.
- Assist CEC staff in preparing necessary reporting for the Community Engagement Center.
- Recruit volunteers and student employees supporting the work of assigned programs.
- Participate in campus and department activities including staff meetings and events.
- Adapt to dynamic circumstances in a fast-paced environment.
- Balance the time and need for both collaborative and independent work.
- Support the adherence of all Pitzer and CEC protocols and policies, identify needs for policy creation and revision, and contribute to an overall healthy and positively functioning team.

Basic Qualifications: Must have a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Must have at least one year of experience in community engagement work, faculty, and student relations, and/or developing community partnerships. Must have at least six months of supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals demonstrating knowledge of the following:
An understanding of the Inland Empire and its surrounding communities, particularly the cities of Pomona and Ontario, and experience working on relevant community justice issues.
