**JOB SUMMARY**

This position is located in the Department of Parks and Recreation, Recreation Services Administration, Aquatics Facilities. The incumbent serves as Recreation Specialist (Pool Operator II).

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**

The incumbent of this position will programmatically operate and provide significant input towards the administration and implementation of activities and services of a major aquatic center equipped to serve a community of up to 100,000 persons. Maintains the full range of pool operator responsibilities. Prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies, rules, and governs conduct at the center. Maintains vigilance on stand to prevent potential emergencies in-water and diving areas. Minimizes risks by the prevention and warning of dangerous practices such as shallow water diving, and underwater breath holding. Enters the water to rescue persons in distress; resuscitates rescued bathers; administers first aid to the injured. Responsible for the area supervision of as many as eight additional seasonal outdoor aquatic facilities that may total to 80 additional staff members. Assures that assigned outdoor aquatic recreational activities meet or exceed the needs of the community that each center is servicing. Assists supervisor and operators of the aquatics center program to recruit and train individuals seeking employment at seasonal and year-round aquatic facilities. Provides guidance and leadership to the center’s various activities. Instructs participants in aquatic activities.

**QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION**

A degree with a major study in general recreation, or on to the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education.

Applicants must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-07 grade level, or its non-District equivalent gained in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs; planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels; instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management; serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations; experience in aquatics recreational activities including teaching swimming lessons.

**LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS**

This position requires that the incumbent possess a current lifeguard certification encompassing the training areas of CPR, rescue skills, AED, supplemental oxygen administration. The required and accepted credential is designated by the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Instructor level certification in the areas of aquatic facility operation, lifeguard training and water safety instruction may be provided and mandated.

Employee must also hold a current pool operators (CPO) permit and be in good standing with the Office of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, Department of Energy and Environment, Department of Health, Office of license and permits.

**WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT**

Aquatic recreation activities involve everyday risks or discomforts, which require normal safety precautions. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.
