Under the supervision of the Fish Hatchery Manager I, this position performs support at California Department of Fish and Wildlife hatcheries statewide. This job involves all aspects of fish culture such as: trapping, spawning, rearing, feeding, treating, transporting and recording data. Incumbent must be able to operate (with department training) forklifts, fish pumps, feed carts, crowders, Class C trucks, and Off Highway Vehicles etc. Perform grounds, facility, and equipment maintenance. This position requires the possession of a valid commercial Class A driver’s license or the ability to obtain within one year of appointment.

In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam:

Working Conditions

The incumbent will be required to work some holidays, weekends, evening or night shifts and special events. Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions, around water, and uneven ground. This position will required occasional travel within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include overnight stay. State housing is not available. Wearing a prescribed CDFW uniform is required.

Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working with fish or wildlife and some knowledge of plumbing, welding, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical skills. Basic math knowledge and experience in collecting, organizing and entering data; a high degree of personal initiative; an ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment and think and work creatively; possess both written, verbal, math, critical thinking and communication skills. Be familiar with small engines and power equipment. Aptitude for wildlife conservation work, willingness to do heavy manual labor, keenness for observation; tact and reliability.
