Under limited supervision, studies, diagnoses and resolves unusual problems encountered in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Instructs and mentors technicians in the inspection, maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment; serves as the senior technician at the assigned facility and performs related work as required.
**Note**: This job announcement may be used to fill future full-time Vehicle and Equipment Technician III positions at other Department of Vehicle Services (DVS) locations - Alban, Jermantown, Newington or West Ox depending on the needs of the hiring department.
**Schedule**: Day Shifts: 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. OR 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Evening Shifts: 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
- A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees currently in possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and hired in the full-time Vehicle and Equipment Technician III position after completing six months of employment with satisfactory performance.

**Illustrative Duties**:

- Diagnoses and resolves difficult problems encountered in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment;
- Identifies proper parts and develops procedures; provides instruction of corrective procedures;
- Provides technical advice and assistance to technicians on new or difficult and complex work and conducts road tests;
- Mentors and provides instruction to technicians on difficult repair work;
- Monitors and evaluates the removal and tear down of components and assemblies by Technicians;
- Meets with manufacturer and service representatives to discuss technical vehicle and equipment problems and to learn systems to ensure vehicles and vehicle systems are constructed in accordance with contract specifications;
- Recommends when a major component or assembly is to be repaired, rebuilt or discarded;
- Reads and interprets technical manuals and service/recall bulletins, investigates and prepares service bulletins for fleet defect reports, and conducts associated training;
- Inspects and monitors work areas, examines tools and shop equipment, and provides employee safety training to prevent, detect, and correct unsafe conditions or violations of procedures and safety rules;
- May act as lead in supervisor's absence.

- Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods used in the mechanical repair of a wide variety of automotive, construction and industrial equipment;
- Thorough knowledge of the laws and regulations governing the condition of vehicles and equipment repaired and maintained, environmental laws governing refrigerant use, and occupational safety regulations regarding safe practices in the workplace;
- Skill in performing difficult mechanical repairs;
- Skill in using and instructing others in using hand and power tools and equipment associated with the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
- Extensive knowledge of methods and tools commonly used by service technicians in the repair and maintenance of automotive and industrial equipment;
- Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade;
- Ability to conduct hands-on training to a team of Vehicle and Equipment Technicians performing repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
- Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with co-workers as well as the public;
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions;
- Ability to read and comprehend relevant documents.
