**Job Description**:
The New York Times seeks a photo editor possessing excellent news judgment, an elevated aesthetic, sharp technical skills, and a firm sense of journalistic ethics to join a team creating visual journalism for news, features and enterprise stories in a fast-moving and deadline oriented newsroom.

The primary duties of the job are to conceptualize, assign, select and publish photography for The New York Times International report. You will conceive of, assign and research a wide array of news and feature photography and video for articles, live briefings, visual essays and emerging visual storytelling formats both on and off platform. You will direct photographers in the field and you will be responsible for considering all presentation formats for the photography you commission and research, prioritizing mobile display and cutting edge digital formats. You will work productively with staff photographers, freelance photographers, wire services, agencies and all other sources of images, as well as editors, designers, and reporters in the newsroom.

This is a full time position. The current expectation is 4 days (Thursdays through Sundays). You will report to the Assistant Editor, International Photography.

**Responsibilities**:
- Conceive of, pitch, develop, assign, edit, pace and build powerful and innovative visual stories with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom.- Initiate and develop ideas for photographs, visual essays and other formats of visual storytelling.- Maintain the highest standard of photography assigning for feature, news and enterprise stories with all platforms in mind, including mobile, print and social.- Collaborate with writers, reporters, editors and photographers to identify images for stories and coverage lines and to shape ideas into visual story opportunities.- Demonstrate strong editorial judgment, working with Times editors and legal department for all vetting, copyright, legal and ethical questions.- Coordinate with International desk editors and security team members to ensure the utmost preparation, training and safety of our photojournalists in the field.-
- Maintain and meet your desk’s photo budget, process/approve invoices in a timely fashion.- Attend photo department meetings to report and share your desk’s visual priorities, and to remain abreast of training and skill development.

Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years experience in a newsroom or equivalent.- Significant experience assigning visual journalism- Sharp news judgment and solid understanding of journalistic ethics.- Broad knowledge of the current photographic landscape, including digitally innovative formats and mobile-first multimedia presentations- Knowledge of digital tools and programs, including content management systems, image handling software such as Photoshop, Lightroom and PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media platforms.- A facility for learning new technology- Knowledge of photographic usage and copyright issues

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $111,711.62 and $112,000.00.
