**Job Summary**:
Under the supervision of the Court Administrator, conducts investigations and prepares reports to assist the bench in determining the most appropriate sentencing of individuals brought before the court. Develops and implements treatment plans for individuals placed on probation in an effort to rehabilitate and prevent future violations. Supervises an active probation case load.

**Primary Duties & Responsibilities**:
Pre-Sentence Investigation (PSI), Caseload:

- Conducts pre-sentence investigations: reviews arrest reports, driving record, criminal history, employment records, and other pertinent information regarding individuals awaiting sentencing. Also interviews the client, family, employer, complainant, law enforcement and school authorities and others as deemed necessary.
- Analyzes pre-sentence information gathered, makes an assessment and recommendation based on the probability of future unlawful behavior. Reports and recommends appropriate sentencing provisions.
- Provides newly assigned probationer orientation: explains and interprets terms and conditions of probation order and court policies and procedures.
- Supervises an active probation case load: ensures compliance and enforces probationary terms specified by judicial order. Makes program referrals, calculates restitution, restricts motor vehicle operator license, enforces fines and costs, also regularly meets with probationers to assess and monitor compliance.
- Refers probationers to community agencies for assessment, counseling and treatment for substance abuse and/or emotional problems. Regularly communicates with these agencies to discuss cases, services, and probationer attendance and progress. Explores new programs to facilitate rehabilitative probation measures.
- Provides probationers with guidance and counseling on personal, financial and related problems, and assists clients in correcting unacceptable behavior.
- Assists probationers in securing employment, entering school, securing training to improve work skills, and with other rehabilitative measures as needed.
- Initiates court amendments such as probation extensions and discharges when determined appropriate. Also makes court appearances for sentencing and probation violation hearings, providing testimony as required.
- Maintains case records and statistics, prepares reports, submits correspondence and documentation, including: updates probationer payment records, notifies probationers of payment arrearages and failure to report, initiates enforcement actions which may include violation petitions and bench warrants.
- Responds to inquiries from attorneys, probationers, law enforcement personnel, public and others, also provides accurate information pertaining to the probation function.
- Conducts alcohol screening and assessments: includes administering written tests, interpreting computer-scored results, and conducting client interview to determine the impact of substance abuse on personal life.
- Coordinates community service placement for court ordered community service in lieu of fines or other penalties.

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor's degree in psychology, criminal justice, social work, counseling or a closely related field.
- Three to six months of prior experience (including internships and on-the-job training) in counseling, mental health, correctional, substance abuse agency or related area preferred. A high level of confidentiality. Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and computer information systems skills.
- One year of prior experience in counseling, mental health, correctional, substance abuse agency or related area preferred.
