**Duties**:

- Provides oversight for a moderate complexity fuels management program. Develops fuels treatment alternatives and evaluates individual fuels treatments.
- Maintains awareness of technological developments in wild land fire science. Responsible for the smoke management program to ensure compliance with state air quality standards.
- Performs fiscal analysis, assists in formulating the annual fuels management budget, and maintains a system of accounts to track program expenditures.
- Prepares wildland fire risk assessments incorporating wildland/urban interface considerations into all agreements, operating plans, and land and fire management plans, to ensure that all interface areas are covered.
- Reviews environmental documents, prescribed fire plans, and wildland fire use plans of other agencies and stakeholders which will affect the unit.
- Implements and administers prescribed fire activities, wildland fire use, and fuels management activities (i.e. surveys) to ensure targets are achieved, management objectives are met and mitigation measures are adequate.

- Must pass the Work Capacity Test for certain Interagency Fire Program Management or Fire Program Management positions.
- Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required.
- Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
- Some Fire positions may have Conditions of Employment such as: a valid state driver's license; a commercial driver's license (CDL); pre-appointment and random drug testing; or a physical or medical examination.

**Qualifications**:

**GS-0401**:
**Degree**: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry, or related discipline appropriate to the position being filled.

**Combination of education and experience**:Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
- **In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.**

**Specialized Experience Requirement**:
**For the GS-09**:You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: Provided input and/or recommended strategies for fuels and fire management. Reviewed environmental documents and fire management plans. Prepared wildland fire risk assessments, operating plans and/or and and fire management plans. Conducted analysis for fuels treatment planning, vegetation analysis, smoke modeling, fire effects determinations, and/or integration of out-year planning. Supported prescribed fire activities, wildfire, and fuels management activities to ensure targets are achieved;
- **-OR-**
A master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., (coursework directly related to the position being filled such as biological sciences, botany, ecology, horticulture, climate sciences, natural resource management);
- **-OR-**
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
