**Department Purpose**

The Police Lieutenant is a member of the Command Staff and may be assigned as a Patrol Lieutenant on the Davis or Sacramento Campus.

**Job Summary**

Under the direction of a Police Captain serves a critical role in the University of California Police Department Patrol Division. Manage, direct, and plan the daily operations and long-range goals. May be assigned to either the Davis or Sacramento Campus.

Patrol Lieutenant:
Provides oversight and supervision to a variety of units and programs including but not limited to patrol, bicycle unit, mutual aid coordinator, campus EOC liaison, protest incident, comp time program manager, scheduling, parking and transportation workgroup member and member of student commission. May act as a media liaison ensuring consistent communication and coordination of safety and security issues. Develop and direct patrol operations, community orientated policing programs and directed patrol programs. Other duties as assigned.

**PHYSICAL DEMANDS**
- Employees in this class must be able to work with exposure to emergency circumstances; work both inside and outside with exposure to all types of weather conditions, including odors, dust and pollen; exposure to chemicals, skin irritants, fumes and solvents;
- The incumbent appointed to this position must be physically able to perform the duties of this position, including the mobility to work in a standard office environment, use standard office equipment and attend off-site meetings; intermittently sit at a desk for long periods of time; walk, stand, bend, squat, twist and reach while performing office duties or field work; lift or carry weight up to 50 pounds; strength and stamina to perform law enforcement duties including making arrests; manual dexterity to use standard office equipment and supplies and operate a keyboard, manipulate single sheets of paper and large document holders (binders, manuals, etc.); vision to read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone or radio.

**WORK ENVIRONMENT**
- Employee personally responsible for following safety guidelines/procedures.
- Availability to work on call.
- Work alternative work schedules and may be assigned to work extended hours as needed, with little or no notice.
- Required to work on weekends as on-call administrator and respond to emergencies or major collisions during this time.
- No felony convictions pursuant to Government Code Section 1029.
- Participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Program.
- Must pass the POST medical and psychological pre-placement examinations.

**MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS**

**Additional Minimum License/Certification**:

- Possess a valid Class C California Driver’s License
- Possess a current California POST Basic Certificate
- Possess a California POST Supervisory Certificate
- Possess or successfully complete the California POST mandated Management Course within twelve months of appointment (11 CCR - 1005).

**Minimum Education/Experience**:

- Current or recently retired California Police Sergeant or higher rank with a minimum of three-years of experience at the rank of sergeant or higher.

**Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)**:

- Knowledge of administrative principles and methods, including goal setting, program development and implementation, personnel management and supervision and functions; laws, rules and regulations governing Police Department activities.
- Ability to analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives, and make sound recommendations related to program activities.
- Ability to plan, organize, assign, supervise, review, and evaluate the activities of program areas within the Police Department
- Ability to develop, implement, and interpret goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards to ensure provision of effective and efficient municipal law enforcement services.
- Ability to prepare clear, concise and logical written and oral reports

**PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS**

**Preferred Education/Experience**:

- Two or four-year degree from an accredited college or university.

**Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)**:

- Knowledge of University ordinances and regulations.
- Knowledge of operational characteristics, services and activities of a comprehensive University law enforcement program
- Prior University law enforcement experience.
- Knowledge of modern office
