North Adams, United States MASS MoCA Full time

Description:
MASS MoCA is an internationally recognized institution known for leading artistic practices in contemporary art forms through ongoing exhibitions, creative development residencies, commissioning, publishing, and long-term engagement with artists who are working to manifest new ideas in close collaboration with MASS MoCA’s curators, art fabricators, and programming departments across the organization. The Curatorial team is led by our Chief Curator in close consultation with the museum’s Director, and in collaboration with the programming teams in Performing Arts & Film and Public Programs. Each plays a pivotal role in shaping the museum's mission, identity, and national/global relationships in the arts field. We emphasize the creation and presentation of new work with artists whose ideas - in all art forms - are bold, expansive, and suited to what MASS MoCA can distinctively support through our unique factory spaces, skills, and resources.

Through research, dialogues, and close communication and partnership across departments, the curatorial development of our exhibitions calendar showcases the work of contemporary artists, fosters critical dialogue, and engages our community with the extraordinary developments in contemporary art - regionally, nationally, and internationally.

The Curator supports the creation of a diverse, balanced exhibition schedule; conceives and curates original, innovative exhibitions including large-scale commissions; oversees the development of publications and touring for exhibitions; maintains and strengthens MASS MOCA's regional and national professional networks; and directly advances key philanthropic support for not only the artists’ working on new projects, but for the department and organization writ large. MASS MoCA is not a collecting institution, although we dedicate numerous gallery spaces to long-term loans of artwork in close discussion with artists and foundations. The presence and care of the artists’ work on long-term loan, which ranges from 7 to 25 years in duration (both indoors and outside), falls under the shared stewardship of the entire curatorial team and MASS MoCA’s Director and Trustees.

As a significant creative/cultural voice and content creator for MASS MOCA, the Curator is responsible for balancing their curatorial autonomy in alignment with the aims of the department, MASS MoCA’s guiding principles, organizational strategies, and mission. MASS MOCA embraces diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion to contribute to an open environment for the artists we work with and the communities we serve.

**General expectations**

All of our Curators seek out and maintain their knowledge of the contemporary art scene and represent the institution in the art world through viewing exhibitions at other museums, cultural hubs and galleries, reading recent publications, meeting with curators and directors at peer institutions, and actively analyzing opportunities to collaborate with other arts organizations, curators, and artists. Most on our team participate in jurying, guest lecturing, student critiques, and in distinguished field nominations, and serve on juried panels for foundations, grants, fellowships, and awards.

Our Curators embark on scores of studio visits with emerging and established artists for exploratory visits, and in the service of upcoming exhibitions, while ensuring travel budgets are adhered to annually.

The curatorial team authors and develops exhibition catalogues and other publications, and supports artist books (where applicable and funded), editions and multiples, and acts as key liaisons with designers, co-authors, editors, publishers, and distributors for the timely completion of publications.

MASS MoCA Curators collaborate with performing arts, public programs, and staff across all departments, and play an active role as collegial/artist partners in the conception, development, and execution of exhibition-related programming. They share and maintain field-wide networks for the department and MASS MoCA writ large.

Curators also build and share foundation, patron, and collector relationships to support the artistic and financial health of all exhibitions, creative development projects, and commissions. They help to support the artists and their studio teams to succeed in their pursuits with MASS MoCA, and ensure MASS MoCA’s ongoing sustainability through resource development.

**Primary Duties and Responsibilities Include**:

- Conceives and organizes exhibitions, alternating spaces in coordination with MASS MoCA Curators and guest curators;
- Oversees the design, development, installation, and execution of exhibitions with the Chief Curator, Director of Exhibitions, and related departments including Public Programs, Communications and Content, Visitor Experience, and Advancement;
- Produces artworks/commissions for both long and short term exhibitions some of which will include periods of research and
