The Division of Infectious Diseases seeks a casual **_Laboratory Aide _**to work under the general supervision of faculty investigator Dr. Jessica Queen. Our group is interested in understanding how the microbiome and specific gut bacteria impact the development of colorectal cancer. To this end, we perform a variety of studies that run the spectrum from bacterial culture to mouse tumor models to analysis of human tissue samples. This position offers an opportunity to work with leaders in microbiome research at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in a very collaborative environment, as well as the ability to learn and perform cutting-edge research in an exciting field.

**Specific Duties & Responsibilities**

The primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:

- DNA extraction from human and mouse tissue and stool samples using a commercial kit.
- Processing of mouse tumor and colon tissue to isolate tumor and immune cells for further analysis, which may include flow cytometry, transcriptional analysis, or DNA sequencing.
- Aseptic technique to culture and isolate bacteria from human or mouse samples.
- Aseptic technique to culture and maintain eukaryotic cell culture.
- Will assist with murine models to collect fecal, serum, and tissue samples.
- Will be expected to keep an orderly and well-organized lab notebook, documenting procedures and experiments thoroughly as well as make a complete digital archive so that all data can be recovered at a later date. Use sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Use universal safety precautions to protect yourself and co-workers. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures. All work is BSL-2.

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Actively pursuing a High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Some college courses preferred.
- Basis Microsoft Office experience helpful.
- Basic laboratory skills such as pipetting and making solutions helpful. Specific training for each task will be provided.
- Basic experience with common laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, analytical balance, and laminar flow hoods is helpful but not required.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to be flexible in work conditions and function well in a team setting.
