I. **Position Concept**:
The Prevention Specialist is responsible for providing effective, research-based and evidence-based substance abuse prevention concepts to families and children in various settings for Brevard Prevention Coalition, but primarily at school sites or in association with school-based programs. Schools may include both public schools (K-12) or institutions of higher learning (colleges, etc.). The goal is to create student
- and family-led advocacy efforts for substance misuse prevention, affording participants the opportunity to achieve their full academic, intellectual, physical, social, and emotional potential as protective factors against substance misuse. This position may coordinate school-based activities and parent education services. It also serves as a point of contact for the schools and related stakeholders, facilitating ongoing communication with their respective leads. Furthermore, it develops and implements strategies in line with Brevard Prevention Coalition’s chosen substance misuse prevention initiatives.

II. **Essential Functions**:

- Maintain knowledge of and implement established substance misuse prevention initiatives in school-based settings, including university or college settings, based on Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Center for Substance Abuse and Prevention (CSAP) strategies as well as maintain an understanding of substance misuse/abuse prevention Institute of Medicine (IOM) targets.
- Take the lead in developing materials that effectively deliver the “Better Without It” (or other management-approved) substance misuse prevention initiative’s messaging for youth groups to promote or utilize amongst peers as well as to their demographic. This includes facilitating the Youth Empowerment Leadership (Y.E.L.P.) component of the “Better Without It” School Diversion Program for students who must complete the diversion program because of drug or alcohol-related offenses on school campus.
- Provide instruction in an evidence-based or research-based substance abuse prevention curriculum (if applicable) to students or youth groups, which may include off-campus youth groups formed from school-based programs.
- Design and use various instructional strategies, innovations, and activities that are research-based, reflective of best practice, and compatible with the total program effort in order to facilitate youth-led advocacy groups that promote select substance misuse prevention initiatives.
- Facilitate summer program services at designated sites, as well as prepare activity plans and document attendance.
- Participate in a continuous program of professional development that supports achievement of the program’s improvement goals as well as meets contractual obligations/requirements for Brevard Prevention Coalition.
- Administer surveys, pre/post assessments and other evaluation tools as required for tracking outcome measures.
- Network with community resources to promote program concepts and support existing programs.
- Assist supervisor in designing and maintaining culturally sensitive prevention services.
- Delivers, supervises, and monitors all contracted activities/services at assigned sites to ensure model integrity and contractual compliance.
- Attend and actively participate in coalition meetings, events, applicable stakeholder meetings.

**III. Other Duties Include, But Not Limited To**:

- Participate in training and development activities as required.
- Adhere to safe practices and ensure safe practice by reporting any acts, incidents, or conditions that reflect the possibility of inappropriate adult-to-adult, youth-to-youth, staff-to-youth, or other adult-to-youth relationships and any use of physical force and all unusual incidents per Brevard Prevention Coalition guidelines.

- Provide input into ordering necessary materials, supplies, and equipment in sufficient numbers to support the substance misuse prevention program and implement its plans for improvement.
- Ensure compliance regarding Federal Block Grant Standards reporting and requirements; Department of Children and Families Substance Abuse License; Managing Entity contract language, reporting requirements and program outcomes; and adherence to state and federal laws related to confidentiality.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

**IV. Position Specifications**:

- Education_: Bachelor’s Degree, from an accredited College or University, in human services required.
- Experience_: Two years working experience with youth in school, counseling, or other therapeutic environment required. Experience in delivery of community outreach work and social work. Experience working with families and youths in supportive and developmental capacity, preferred.
