Overview: UCLA Recreation is a large department within the Division of Campus Life in Student Affairs with approximately 90 full-time career and contract and over 1,000 part-time employees. UCLA Recreation provides extensive access to a broad range of recreational activities and wellbeing services and offers programming which encompasses the competitive, passive, social, cultural, and instructional aspects of recreational activity. In addition, the department manages 15 of the University's recreational and athletic facilities offering recreation, competition, and numerous multi-use options for student and university events. Responsibilities:
The Program Director of Outdoor Adventures is responsible for managing the Outdoor Adventures unit operations and programs. The goal of these varied programs is developing leadership and team building skills for students, campus departments and other University groups, conference and corporate groups, and youth programs. The incumbent manages and supervises programming, scheduling, liability and risk, for the Climbing Wall, the Challenge Course, the Outdoor Rental Center, the Bike Shop, and Adventure Trips and Classes. The Program Director directly supervises 2-3 full-time staff and indirectly supervises part-time student and limited staff. Under the general guidance of the Associate Director, Experiential Programs, the incumbent prioritizes and completes tasks following established department guidelines and university policies and procedures, as well as any applicable federal, state and local statutes and regulations. Review by supervisor is through regular meetings and an annual performance evaluation. Meets with subordinates through regularly scheduled meetings and as needed for the exchange of information.

- Demonstrated ability to plan and administer a multi-dimensional Outdoor Adventure Center and its varied facilities and programs that include Rock Climbing, Kayaking and River Rafting, Hiking and Camping, etc. (required)
- Demonstrated ability to manage an Equipment Rental Center and Bike Shop, a Challenge Course that includes low and high elements, a Climbing Wall, including scheduling, coordinating maintenance and operations and oversight of varied user groups. (required)
- Working knowledge of experiential education and "Leave No Trace" outdoor skills and ethics. (required)
- Advanced Skill in: Developing collaborative working relationships with colleagues and subordinate staff; (required)
- interacting diplomatically with participants; and ability to maintain equanimity in the face of resistance in a public contact situation. (required)
- Advanced skill in financial analysis, planning, budget preparation and administration, and income generation including correlation of available resources to expenditures. Demonstrated ability to plan and administer a fee-for-service program which will operate to recover costs and generate income. (required)
- Demonstrated skill in writing concise, logical, grammatically correct materials such as program proposals, annual reports, administrative and operational guidelines, performance evaluations and promotional materials. (required)
- Working knowledge of related outside advisory and regulatory agencies and their services. Working knowledge of accepted practices, policies and procedures regarding insurance and risk management, accounting personnel, health and safety, and material management. (required)
- Superior ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with mínimal direction. Skill in prioritizing tasks to complete work in a timely manner when there are changes in workload, assignments, deadlines or competing requirements. (required)
- Demonstrated skill in supervising staff including training, establishing objectives, evaluating and disciplining when necessary. (required)
- Ability to supervise and mentor college students and a variety of staff. Experience in the field of Recreation or other relevant fields, in a University setting. (preferred)
- Ability to work varied hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays. (required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications, & Professional Affiliations:
- Master's Degree in Recreation or equivalent field or equivalent combination of education and professional experience. (preferred)
- Certification by the American Red Cross in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), at time of hire (required)
- Ability to drive a University vehicle for University business in accordance with all laws and regulations
