**START A CAREER AS A COMMUNITY SERVICE OFFICER**

**Work Schedule**:

- The Community Service Officer (CSO) schedule can consist of a variety of day or evening shifts, including weekends and holidays. Community Service Officers can be assigned to work in various divisions, including but not limited to Patrol, Investigations, and Community Services.

**Training**:
Under general supervision, relieves sworn police officers of non-hazardous police related duties; acts as liaison between community and Police Department for crime prevention purposes; coordinates the service needs of events held at facilities and grounds; serves as the City's representative at assigned events; performs related work as assigned.

**CLASS CHARACTERISTICS**:

- Community Service Officer I is the entry-level position in this Community Service Officer series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn Police Department and City policies and procedures. As experience is gained, there is greater independence of action within established guidelines. This class is alternately staffed with Community Service Officer II, and incumbents may advance to the higher level after successfully completing a one-year probationary period and gaining one additional year of experience and demonstrating proficiency which meets the qualifications of the higher level class.

**PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)**:

- Meets with general public or confers on the telephone, provides information and referrals in non-hazardous situations, gathers relevant police information on non-criminal and criminal activity, and conducts support/administrative work as necessary.
- Assists with and responds to non-emergency and emergency calls as directed; and collects, processes, and transports evidence as directed.
- Observes, reports and whenever feasible, follows up on conditions of blight, neglect, and/or quality of life issues; issues Administrative Citations, and notice of violations of the Stockton Municipal Code (SMC) and other statutes which pose potential threats to public safety, health, and abuse of public property; responds to and investigates complaints regarding non-hazardous violations of the SMC; takes appropriate action to insure compliance.
- Prepares for and testifies at criminal, civil and administrative proceedings/hearings.
- Gathers information and completes investigative reports and, if necessary, follows up on a variety of non-hazardous incidents, this includes, but is not limited to thefts, malicious mischief, abandoned vehicles, lost and found property, identity theft, missing persons, and other situations.
- Meets with users to provide information regarding the capabilities and services of facilities; determines equipment, personnel, vendors, and other services required for events; and reviews contracts to assure compliance with terms and conditions.
- Operates a computer and assigned software to input citation data, extracts information, and generates reports.
- Provides traffic/crowd control for accidents, parades and other special functions.
- Conducts neighborhood watch meetings and makes neighborhood watch contacts through door-to-door recruitment and surveys; and coordinates special Police Department functions, community projects, speakers bureaus, prepares and maintains records and statistics, etc.
- Responds to citizen letters to the Police Department; prepares data for crime prevention in targeted City areas; assists with special projects and assignments.
- Maintains basic records of work performed.
- Prepares, writes, edits and distributes newsletters, pamphlets and other informational materials.
- Coordinates, prepares and delivers special children’s crime prevention programs for schools and community groups, for example, “Stockton Safe Kid’s Academy.”; coordinates and participates in the school Traffic Safety Patrol program; and photographs and fingerprints individuals in crime prevention programs.

**QUALIFICATIONS**:
**Education**:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

**Experience**:
Two (2) years of experience which has included **both** **substantial public contact **and **general office clerical work.

**Other Requirements**:

- Must possess a valid California driver's license.
- Must be willing to work rotating evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Must have sufficient strength and dexterity to hook and unhook a trailer hitch and maneuver other special equipment.
