**Duties**:
Rescues swimmers in trouble, promptly administers first aid, and calls for medical assistance if and when needed. Continuously observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions, ocean conditions of rough water or hazards, and recommends closing swimming areas until safe conditions prevail. Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area. Ensures that diving boards are inspected frequently for cracks or loose matting, and that necessary repairs are made. May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming area to include: cleaning of bath houses, wading pools, main pools, pool decks, beach areas, sunbathing areas, etc. When working at pools, may operate water pumps and control chemical additives to ensure pool water meets specified standards.

**Conditions of Employment**:

- This position requires the incumbent to complete a background investigation with favorable results.
- Must have an approved and current nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as basic first aid training, and CPR (both child and adult) training.
- This position requires regular contact with children under the age of 18 and a favorable fitness determination to do so.
- This position has requirements which must be met prior to employment, and conditions for continued employment.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and one every three years thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations

**Qualifications**:

For pool and aquatic center lifeguards:

- Must have an approved and current nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as basic first aid training, and CPR (both child and adult) training.
- Must have experience which provides a practical knowledge of swimming activities, rules and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is desirable.
- Must be able to satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical examination.
- Satisfactory completion of installation records checks, state and national criminal background checks may be required for positions that provide lifesaving duties for children.
- Must be able to satisfactorily complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).
- Position is a position of trust.

**Education**:
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution.

**FOREIGN EDUCATION**:Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
