**Examples of Duties**:
Under direction, the Assistant Public Works Director assist the Director with the management of all activities and services of the Public Works Department. The Assistant Director coordinates and directs personnel and resources, develops administers and evaluates projects and procedures to meet organizational needs and ensure smooth and efficient activities. The Assistant participates in preparation and monitoring of department budgets and will need to supervise and participate in a variety of personnel actions, including selection, promotion, performance evaluations and disciplinary action, and perform other related duties as assigned. This position is eligible to work a hybrid work from home schedule.

**ESSENTIAL DUTIES**:

- Assist the Director in developing, organizing and managing the operations, services and activities of the Public Works Department, including the maintenance and construction operations of the Water, Facilities, Roads and Landscape divisions; provide technical expertise to resolve inquiries and conflicts and ensure that assigned functions and activities comply with established standards, requirements, internal controls, laws, codes, regulations, ordinances, policies and procedures.
- Participate in the development and implementation of Public Works Department programs, projects, goals, objectives, policies and priorities for each assigned service area; establish and maintain, within City policy, appropriate service and staffing levels and allocate resources accordingly.
- Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; assess and monitor work load, administrative support systems and internal reporting relationships; identify opportunities for improvement; direct the implementation of changes.
- Represent the Public Works Department to other City departments, elected officials and outside agencies; explain and interpret Public Works Department programs, policies and activities; negotiate and resolve sensitive, significant and controversial issues.
- Select, train, motivate and evaluate Public Works Department personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies.
- Assist with the development and implementation of the Public Works Department’s work plan; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign projects and programmatic areas of responsibility; review and evaluate work methods and procedures; initiate corrective actions.
- Assist with, and participate in, the development and administration of the Public Works Department budget; direct the forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; track, monitor and approve expenditures; direct the preparation and implementation of budgetary adjustments; maintain records according to accounting policy and procedure.
